I am thinking of introducing Madison to solids as i feel she is ready but was wondering what and how much to give her. I know to try her on rice cereal first for a couple of days but what after that. I would love some ideas as to if you give two courses each meal ie one savoury and one sweet or just one puree of veg and rice cereal??

As you can tell i am a bit confused and would appreciate any help.

Thanks

A lot of babys don't like rice cereal. Daniel still doesn't like it and he's been on solids for a while.

It's best to start out with really basic stuff like carrots/pumpkin/kumara, most babies like these. And then theres the fruit side of things like apples or pears.

I wouldn't bother starting 2 course meals yet, it will take a while til she gets use to being on solids before you can do that.

They usually only take a 2 or 3 teaspoons at first (this is what daniel did anyway)

I did baby rice first and then after a few days gave him some apple with it, then I slowly introduced other fruits and veges and stuck to the 4 day rule. I wouldn't worry about introducing veges before fruit I think it is bollox that it makes them sugar addicts to have fruit first. Like kumara or parsnips are any less sweet
He just has everything mixed together at the moment, and there are some quite nice combos of fruit and veg that you can do. Like pumpkin and pears, apple and carrots etc. For xmas dinner Spencer had Turkey, carrots and pears and loved it. I try to give him some baby rice once a day as it has extra iron it but if he doesn't like it don't worry about it.
For the first attempt just make it really runny and mix with breastmilk/formula so the taste is not too different to what he is having at the moment, and if he doesn't like the rice just leave that and try something else.

I followed Miriam Stoppards thing for introducing the solid which is to give half boob/bottle then a teaspoon of food and the the rest of the boob/bottle. And slowly up the amount they eat of the solids over the next weeks or so. After a while of that once he had the taste for it I started giving him the whole of his bottle and then the solids.
We started with lunch then dinner and have now just introduced brekkie.

Hope that helps the whole solids thing is so bloody confusing, I'm now wondering how and when to introduce finger foods

Yeah, I pretty much did the same as cuppatea...a new food every 4 days. Ours was rice, then pears, then carrots, then apples, then kumara, then pumpkin and I stuck with that for awhile and am now just starting to introduce some new combos. I started with lunch (which was around 1-2ish) and then moved onto lunch and dinner not long after that. Hopefully won't have to do brekkie for awhile yet

If you ave allerges in the family, then it is worth doing a bit of reeading around the topic. There are definate foods to delay introducing that are common foods.

A great food to start with is avocado. You don't have to do baby rice. (many babies hate it and it is a carb which is what your milk is). Courgette has been Lily's favourite so far.

The reccomended list of 4-6 month foods from Plunket are: apple, pear, peach, kumara, potato, pumpkin, carrot, kamokamo, marrow and uncooked avocado and banana.

The standard at this age is milk first then solids, especially as it really is just a taste at this age. I give milk, then do solids half an hour later, so Lily is hungry for it.

One meal is plenty at this stage, breakfast should be the last meal introduced, so lunch or dinner. Lunch is often reccomended as you have a better chance of seeing a reaction to the food. That is also why they suggest introducing a single food at a time then once they have tried a few 9say the list above) you can mix combos together for other taste sensations.

texture - fine smooth, runny or pureed till 6 months.

Cuppatea, the plunket/watties info that I am quoting from says 8-9 months for most finger foods, when you do food before milk. I sometimes give lily a celeery stick as it is nice when she is teething, but they can get chunks off at this age ever and not have the ability to swallow it all that well!

I have just started Tom and we are muddling our way through. Today I found an EXCELLENT book by Allison and Simon Holst all about baby food and it explained things beautifully. I also found the www.greenmonkeys.co.nz site useful. They have a great colour coded chart of what food at what age and what to avoid that you can stick on your fridge.

Why do they make solids the big taboo mystery???

Plunket also have a great carrot guide that has all the ages and stages of food to give.

Cuppatea I would start now with finger foods. I starting giving Alize toast from 5mths just to chomp around on and by 10mths old he could eat an apple

Alize 10mths old

Demolishing the apple

I have been wondering that too. It never was an issue when I had my 1st daughter.

Am I the only one who doesn't think the poos are that bad once they start solids? at least they are more solid (except when teething )and a lot of time can just be tipped into the toilet- heaps easier when they are wearing cloth nappies.

Cuppatea- Ella has had a few finger foods, mainly rusks (going to start making my own soon) and a banana. I think most of the other finger foods you can start once they are 8 months.

I also found the book by Alison/Simon Holst very useful.

oh, while we are now having huge poos and around 2 a day so far I havn't noticed a smell change.

i cant say I have found solids a big secret mystery at all, the biggest problem I have is the rpessure to start before 6 months and then the huge conflict between the watties/plunket suggestions and the natropath allergy prevention suggestions.

i reckon in the end you pick how you are going to do it and do it that way, buggar everone else!

There cute pics Kels. I did give him a piece of toast a while ago but he was totally unimpressed and he can't have rusks cos they have milk in them. Might look up a recipe to make my own and do them with rice milk.

Miss, I just found that along with when to start, there is also what to start with, how much, when and how to increase the amount, when to introduce more feeds etc etc. And like you say there is a lot of conflicting advice from watties/plunket and the allergy stuff, cos your allergy stuff didn't tie up with the allergy stuff I had been given But like you say you just have to pick what you think is best and get on with it.....would just be nice if you could know for sure that you were doing the right thing.
Although the recommendation is 6 months plunket do seem quite keen on them starting earlier still. Best thing I ever read was to watch the baby and not the calender!!!!!

As for poos, Spencer has done a few real stinky ones but the whole I don't think they are any worse than before, they are sometimes bright orange though from the pumpkin and carrots that he loves.
