Topic: Green poos Posted: 29 January 2008 at 12:12pm |
Hi
I've been told conflicting advise about green poos and was wondering if you guys knew what the answer was.
I was told by my midwife that green poos is a good sign that baby is getting everything he needs. Then I was told by someone else that green poos meant that baby was only getting the foremilk.
The reason I'm asking is Rex has started doing really quick feeds (was 30 minutes, now 10 - 15 minutes). He seems happy enough and still settles really well, so I'm sure he's getting all he needs...
But I'd still like to know what green poos means.

I was told it means that baby has lots of iron in their system! (So i guess a good thing). Carys does green poop 9 out of 10 times and her Paed was very happy with that!

He'll just be getting faster at feeding so don't worry about the feeding times.
Usually green poos means that it's been in their system a little longer, and seems to hold true for Daniel.
I don't worry about it.

I too also heard that green poos is a sign of foremilk, but to be honest I think it could be anything. Some days Cohen's would be green and others would be yellow - go figure. As long as weight gain is good all should be right.
It BTW they do tend to get much quicker at feeding around three months.

Lol, the conflicting advice drives you nuts sometimes!
But the stuff on here is all good - they do start feeding faster aroudn this age and green poos is fine!

Yes agreed conflicting advice does suck indeed!
I also was told that green poos was from too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk ...but as mentioned above Lucas' poos differ in colour from day to day
And they do reduce their feeding times tremendously as they get older. I remember around the 3 month stage Lucas went from feeding for about 30-45mins down to 5-10 mins and i started worrying he wasn't getting enough but was told by numerous ppl that he looked healthy (big boy), was gaining weight fine and that they become more efficient with sucking as they get older!
Sorry prob just repeated what everyone else said, but always better to hear it twice lol

I was told the same thing, not enough hindmilk, by my midwife.
But plunket told me different and that it was perfectly normal. I tended to trust my plunket nurse more than my midwife (she only came on the scene after Char was born so we didn't have any relationship as such).
But while listening to my midwife, I did to combat it, in case it was too much foremilk and not enough hind, was to feed her on the same side but have a break halfway through, change nappy, then go back to it. The green poo went away eventually. I would not stress about it. If he is happy and healthy, its all good!

I'd say if he's happy and growing OK, I wouldn't worry too much - it will go away

Hey Nikki, is he sleeping well at night again? If he's pretty good (like at least one stretch of 6hrs) then he's probably getting plenty of hindmilk aye? Unless he's having a formula topup at night, which i think he might be? So that would make it harder to tell

Oh good question Nikki - Anyssa is also feeding for shorter times now, and has green poos about half the time. I also thought it was too much foremilk - but didn't want to go back to longer feeding because that was linked to our sleeping problems (ie she was having a wee snooze while feeding, and then not sleeping).
I'd be very happy to learn that it wasn't too much foremilk! Isn't it crazy how much conflicting advice there is about everything!!

If it's too much foremilk then how come my formula-fed baby has green poop???? Also, Carys was getting huge amounts of foremilk when i was BF because of my overactive letdown but generally had yellow poop.
I doubt that's the only reason if it is a viable one!

Yeah that's what I was wondering too as Jack has green poop most of the time and is on formula, so it can't solely be too much hindmilk? And when he was on the boob he pretty much only got hindmilk cos he was too lazy to feed and never had green poop! Go figure!

Newmum - my mother tried to insist it was wind as well. I however, was not convinced. Not sure what It may be but if he is happy/healthy I don't think it's too much of a problem.

I think it is only a problem if it is mucousy as that could mean too much foremilk. But apparently they get to the hind milk very quickly anyway.
