    Posted: 15 February 2008 at 5:15pm
We went to Mum and Dad's the other night for my brother's birthday dinner and it got me wondering about what other people do regarding bedtime when you are out.
Jack (9 1/2mths) normally baths about 6/6.30pm and then we are feeding and going to bed by about 7pm. The other night he had a 1/2hr nap at Mum and Dad's just after 6pm, then was up for the rest of the evening. We put a clean nappy on and his pj's just before we left at about 9.30pm and then went straight to his room on arriving home for a BF and bed.

What do other people do? Do you still follow your bedtime routine and then just put baby in the car when it's time to go? (Can't see that working for us) Or does your routine go out the window for the evening

Our routine goes out of the window if we are out at night. We went to mum & dads for New Years and Gina fell asleep at 5 min to midnight - she was just too much into everything to want to sleep before and believe me we tried

Out the window. On an at home night we have the girls in bed by 7. When we go out we usually leave about 8 or 8.30, home by 9. I pack night nappies (usually skip pj's) and change them right before we leave to go home. Then at home it's usually a straight transfer from van to bed. Sometimes we have ended up rocking the baby to sleep in our arms when she got tired to give us extra time out.

If we are going to someones house then it is pretty much the same...down to bed around 6.30-7.00pm and we just keep resettling her if necessary. Only get her up to go home then straight to bed once home.

Only difference would come if we were going out to dinner somewhere for example. Also on the cruise it was a bit up in the air as we put her down in the evening for an hour or so then got her up to go catch a show (which she normally slept through most of) and up one night around 9.30 to go to the Island Night Party.

Gee you are all brave!
If we have gone out, we leave when Isla is ready for bed, which is usually by 7.30-8pm. Usual bedtime at home is 6.30pm

It depends where i am. I went to Leish house once and as she had a portacot she put it up for him ot sleep in so he had bath and bed at roughly the same time.

I depends on where I am going and how long i'm going to be. Usually it goes out the window but if we are going to the in laws then I put Josh into bed in the portacot when ever he is tired when we are there.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

If we're going to someones house, we put Eva to bed in a bedroom, either on a bed or in a portacot. If she wakes, and it's late, we usually head home fairly soon afterwards. When we get home I feed her again, then it's off to bed.

we try to stick to routine with Jeremy, usually bout half hour later.
I normally will just take buggy over potacot, I have found this works so much better, you can just go for a quick walk until bubs is asleep and then wheel them into a spare room, perfect!
Cailin is 2.5, so she usually stays up and will normally ask to go to be around 10.30 - 11pm

it really depends on where we are, what we are doing and how long we are going to be there for......in saying that, we don't get out much anyway

if we are at my parents for dinner or something where we aren't staying all night the kids just have a late night. we take their pj's and night naps so when we get home it's straight to bed. if we are staying the night somewhere, then it's the usual bedtime of 7.30pm

If I know I'm going to be out later than say 8pm, we just get one of the mummas to babysit. They love babysitting and it means that we dont have the grumpy overtired child.

Depends what we are doing. We took him to Sparks in the parks the other week and I got him to sleep (holding and rocking, haven't done that in a long time). But then he woke up when I transferred him to someone else so I could have a pee, then he stayed up and watched Bic Runga and the fireworks, I gave him an extra feed then we went home, he was so tired I was able to transfer him from his carseat straight to bed (yay for travel sleeping bags). He then slept through till 7.30am.
If taking to friends then I normally try to follow a routine but put him to bed either in a pram or a portacot (pram normally works better). Then transferring him to go home normally disturbs him so I give him another feed at home (but he would have his night nap already on). That has worked really well and again he will sleep right through as if its any other night.

We usually do the bedtime routine before leaving home and then put her in the carseat rather than bed. With a bit of luck she goes to sleep in the car and then transfer her to a portacot when we get to our friend's house. If we're really lucky she will handle the home trip without waking. If not, just feed her again and put her to bed like normal.

Once we tried to go to a bbq and just put her on a double bed to sleep - was a disaster so will always take the portacot from now on.

lily will generally go down at normal time and wake after 45 mintues then be up till we go home. Once home do a dream feed then bed. Works fine for us.

if we go out we try and be home by 8 30 and she might sleep in car if we are out too far...otherwise home and straight to bed...have even taken her to botany ready for bed!

otherwise - grannie has been babysitting...so our household is not the norm...we are pretty lucky!

Depends on where were are, if at friends or family, we will follow our night time routine as much as possible and use a portacot. Anywhere else, the routine goes out the window and we just try not to stay out too late.

yeah it's a hard one eh.. I must say we probably don't stay out that late anymore! hahaha.. if we are at either grandparents, they have a permananet portacot set up, Tyde has his Peke Moe which is a great sleep cue, and he'll happily snuggle up in that in the portacot at either house. We were out at the beach and then went to a friends for tea and there was no portacot, and everyone was a bit loud, the van was parked close to where we were all eating, so I put him in his carseat with his peke moe on and he crashed out! (must've been tired! ;) ) hahaha.. I think you just play it by ear and try not to get too stressed if it doesn't go according to plan. if worse comes to worse, do a runner and go home.. you might even be lucky enough to get out of the dishes! ;)
