Is it the dummy falling out that wakes him? If he can sleep in the pushchair and car seat without the dummy to me it suggests that he needs it to go to sleep not necessarily while he is asleep. I have recently 'weaned' Jack off bf to sleep. I just fed him till drowsy and then rocked him to sleep. Maybe you could do the same with the dummy, let him have it until drowsy then remove and rock/pat, whatever you choose to sleep.
Every baby is different but IMO younger than 4mths is too little to self settle, I think they need something to help them relax and go off to sleep

if i take it out..he will cry..really loud and high pitched:( but i havent tried for a few days.. he will always use it to go to sleep as you say..but often he will wake and cry and you put it back in and he goes straight back to sleep.
it seems most of the bubs in the jan/.feb thread go to sleep by themselves so i assumed it wasnt too young..but maybe it is for my boy:)

It is the same with my coffee group. Jack is the only one that is assisted to sleep and he is nearly 1. To begin with I never really knew about self settling and we had some big problems. I have been assisting him ever since. Most of the time I don't mind it, some nights are harder than other. Self settling is a skill he needs to learn, just like driving a car. They all learn at their own pace, in their own way.

yes very good point:) i shouldnt compare( i know that being a teacher but its hard:) ) I dont mind helping him sleep..jus used to spend an hour putting dummy back..but not so bad now its just daytime!:)

I'm not sure how we do it so it doesn't cover her face, we accidentally did it with Jack and now its just habit.
Fair enough, unfortunately for me when Caprece wakes its not for dummy and will never take it unless shes had boob first so for us we had to try and teach her to go without boob at night.
Does he wake after 45 mins? He might not be realiseing how to go back to sleep after he wakes from his first sleep cycle. If thats the case go in to his room just before 45 mins is up and rock him or do whatever you do when you put him to sleep to try and get him to stay asleep. It takes a few gos of it not working but then they suddenly get it and all their sleeps get better.

KA, Harry usually needs a dummy to go to sleep. And sometimes if he's really grizzly he needs a little cuddle til he's calmed down and is drowsy, and then I pop him into bed.

rach- yeah it is after 45 mins.. last night without safety sleep every 1.5 (two sleep cycles i guess) he got his arms out adn started having a party so I'd go in re wrap and he'd go straight back to sleep..lol.. good to know eventually they get it:) !
arohanui- yeah me to with Ethan and at night now its fine he will mostly go straight to sleep but any other time and he cries for it to be put back in..

so in the day its both problems..he wakes for it after 45 mins and he needs it put in 5.6 times over 30-40 mins to go to sleep..unless hes in the car or the pram then just goes to sleep by himself..sometimes without it

I wish I had some better advice for ya I remember Caprece doing that but I can't quite remember what we did to help her sleep longer. I think it was just one of those things they eventually get.
How are you putting him to sleep? Awake or drowsy? Have you tried letting him have a wee grizzle when he wakes to see if he will put himself back to sleep?
How dark is his room?
How long is he up for and is he showing tired signs? He might need to be kept up for a wee bit longer now.
Thats about all I could come up with sorry so hopefully he starts sleeping longer for you.
