Topic: how do i teach my 8 month old crawler NO! Posted: 19 May 2008 at 8:28am |
How do i teach my 8 month old crawling baby no? I have used all the things I usually do with the kids at preschool ie, firmly saying no, redirection etc but he just laughs then beelines for the heater again, do i just give in and get one of those protector things for heaters? still he has to learn no anyway, do i just keep reinforcing until the penny drops? any ideas much appreciated! 4 year olds are so much easier!

Michaela was the same with our tv. We instigated a form of time out. I'd tell her no and if she ignored me I'd pick her up and hold her (with my arms over hers so she couldn't move) facing the wall for about 40 secs. After a couple of attempts it worked and then all we need to say was no and she'd stop.

to be honest for the things that could hurt them (i.e heaters) I give get a barrier of some sort- better to safe than sorry.
We tend to say 'stop' to Ella when she gets into things she isn't suppose to, sometimes she just stops and does something else- other time she laughs and does it anyway. I think it is just a matter of being consisent and they will eventually learn- in the weekend Ella learnt that she wasn't suppose to play with the remote at my parents house and all it took was a couple of times Dad saying No to her and she understood (she still tried to reach for it a couple of times after that, but before she did she wasn't checked to see if Dad was watching her- it was was rather cute).

I agree with Mum2Ella, we have guarded the things that are unsafe and for anything else we have just tried to stay consistent and say no. I think he is getting better but still goes for the sky decoder and telephone jack sometimes!

Hello Good Luck !! With this it's a tricky one.
As we all know it's not the actual word at this age but the tone of voice, facial expression and body lnaguage.
At Luke's age he is understanding no but when he was 8 months old no chance. We tend to use Stop and move him away and engage him in another activity.
We have barriers!! I tell u it's like a different house!! Lots of barriers.
At work with kids this age we re direct especially those who like to eat the leaves off plants or try to tip the bin over. Ahhh this age is such fun!!!

I could post this same thread except it would be "how do I teach my 19 mth old walkers no?"
From memory with Maya it was just a case of perserverence, she did eventually get the message, and also putting safe boundaries in place so she couldn't hurt herself on the heater/power sockets etc.

I'd get a barrier for safety but I wouldn't stop enforcing. For that age, we keep repeating 'no' and moving them. They give up after a while, you just have to tell yourself "I am more stubborn than this little baby and I WILL win!" - it works!!
Emma, Kryssi goes in time out like the older girls, but we don't insist on her staying there at this stage (probably at 2yrs?). She laughs mischeviously as we carry her away from the wrong-doing but the second her butt is placed on the bathroom floor, she cries like nothing else! She clearly understands what it is all about!!

IMO 8 months is too young to understand. I'd get a guard for the heater to be safe and teach 'no' or 'stop' on things that don't matter so much. Eventually he'll understand the meaning of no, that doesn't mean he'll do what you tell him to though. LOL.

LOL Teresa, we do time out too, mostly for biting/hitting coz they do a lot of that. Sienna is sooo funny she cracks massive tanty's at being in time out,Mercedes doesn't seem to care.

well my 11 month old sure understands no cause when we tell him "no" he stops and looks at us then sees we are serious (even though we are trying to keep a straight face cause he has a cheeky grin on his face) and nine times out of ten he will leave it alone. Its really funny with the fireplace (we have a contained one) I sat real close with him while it was going so that he could feel the heat - i told him its" hot burnie, burnie" and he never goes near it when its going only when its not!!
