Topic: We need some advice! Posted: 30 June 2008 at 9:00am |
About Zoe.
Waking alot in the night, not going back to sleep, still wrapped, not sure how we are managing to do this, but we are, DH going in millions of times to put the dummy back in.
Zoe is having more bottles at night than she should be. Wanting more in the early hours of the morning.
We aren't sure if she is teething as her cheaks have been red, so have been giving her panadol and bonjela, or growth spurt! Can't remember Lucy being like this, then again Lucy was a text book baby... lucky for us, so this time around we are clueless!
Any suggestions on what to do or should I ring the plunket line... then again you guys are just as good or even better than the plunket line!

You could have a read of www.elizabethpantley.com she is the author of the no cry sleep solution, she gives you some ideas on there, otherwise check your library and see if they have the book.
Cooper was really bad around 6mths where he was waking up like a new born. We worked with a sleep therapist for a few weeks.
We introduced the dream feed at 10.30 - giving him 200mls
If he woke in the night from 10.30-6am he was given 50mls.
We didn't give him a big feed again until "getup" time. By doing that we have reduced all of the "during the night" wake ups and he's now down to waking around 4am then again at 7.

Bummer Lisha but I think I remember Tom doing something similar about 7 months....and he didnt get teeth till 9 months. Now we get sleepless nights when he is teething so that could be it.
hope it passes for you soon.

What time does she go to bed for the night? What size bottle does she have then?
If you don't think she'll drink 200mls, maybe try 150mls. Remember - dont' wake her up, just put the bottle in her mouth and let her drink. She might freak out the first time, but I'm sure she'll slowly get the hang of it.

Hmm I think she should probably having more than that, that's probably where the problem lies, shes hungry.
Try 150mls for her last feed and for her dream feed and see how that goes tonight.

She may not be able to settle without the dummy, so you might have to ditch it, or unwrap her and get her to put her own dummy in.
After a failed dummy ditching attempt at about 5.5mths we have had success with the latter - we unwrapped her an arm at a time (it was very hard to keep her wrapped anyway) and we leave 3 dummys in the cot so she can always get one. Seems to work - she has been sleeping thru pretty consistently since then.

I would ditch the dummy too if you're having to go and put it back in all the time. Took Jack about a week to right himself but now he's fine.
He wakes about 4am some mornings from teething, I've had to start giving him a dreamfeed again to get a full nights sleep. He gets a 260ml bottle at 6.30 (of which he probably drinks 220ml usually) and a 120ml dreamfeed as a topup at 10.30. He's been sleeping until 6.30, so I'm going to up the dreamfeed amount so I get a lie-in!

After hearing one of the mummys on here say that teething only gives them up to 3 days of irritabilty per tooth I did a bit of research on the net and found this to generally be acknowledged.
Are her teeth bothering her during the day? If they aren't bothering her during the day it's pretty unlikely to bother her at night.
I think every unexplained irritability gets blamed on poor old teething - I'm sooo guilty of this!!
I'd ditch the dummy, I'm far too lazy to get up and replace a dummy during the night, you shouldn't need to do that. It sounds like she can't sleep without a dummy in her mouth which isn't a great habit to form IMO or let an arm free so she can at least suck on her hands or replace the dummy herself for comfort.

The only thing that stands out to me is teething.......and its so hard to know what to do about it - it can go on for a couple of nights to a couple of weeks.

Tyde started the losing the dummy thing at about that age, that's also when he moved into the Peke MOe. We attached his dummy with a strap on the front of his Peke Moe, and I went in and would guide his hand to his dummy in the dark and he worked out how to put it in by himself really fast.
I agree with the dreamfeed, this worked really well for us. What I did, was that Tyde wouldn't drink well before his bedtime anyway (7pm) so he'd go to bed without a bottle, then I'd do a dream feed when I went to bed (about 9pm or a little later) or earlier if I was tired, and hewould drink around 200mls!! worked really well.
all the best!!!
