Topic: Teething or Formula? HELP! Posted: 23 September 2008 at 8:57am |
For about a week Caden has become very fussy while having his bottle, he will drink for a minute or so then he will pull off the teat and cry and pull his legs up to his chest, which says to me its wind, but I will try winding him and he doesnt want a bar of it! So I start feeding him again, and same thing, then he will just not want to drink anymore, he usually drinks 200ml+ and he had dropped to 80-90mls.
I called Healthline the other night because I was so frustrated and about to have a mummy meltdown and they said it sounds like teething, he HAS been shoving anything he can find into his mouth and he will suck and bite down on my fingers quite hard, he is dribbling a bit aswell....
He is a very happy boy, he doesnt seem unwell and he is totally fine while he is not feeding and he laughs and talks etc, its just while he is having his bottle that he plays up.
He sounds in pain when he cries, but if its teething he wouldnt be pulling his legs up right?
I had him on the Heinz Nurture formula and we had no problems until they changed it, then he got the runs, so I put him on Nestle NAN with pro-biotics about 2 weeks ago. He seemed fine on it until a week ago, when he started fussing etc.
My first instinct was that its the new formula, just because he seemd to be in pain wind wise when he was crying and he has been doing really awfully smelly farts, now I know the pro-biotics makes their poo more stinky but his smell REALLY bad sometimes and I can hear his tummy gurgling.
Last night I put him on the Heniz Nuture for hungry babies and he still fussed at the bottle, but this morning he drunk 180ml with not much fuss at all, I just needed to stop a few times to wind him.
So, do you guys think its wind due to intolerance to the Netle NAN, or do you think tis teething?
Im at a loss and SO confused and frustrated!
Sorry for the Novel!

I don't think that's teeth, I think your first instinct with wind would be the problem. He may not have wind in his stomach, it might be further down which burping won't help. Have you tried infacol?? That always helps Daniel fart/burp out any wind
nestle nan might just not be for him, just like karicare is good for some bubs but Daniel gets horrible wind on it.

Yep he has infacol in his bottles all the time. Caden got wind and constipation from Karicare aswell Stacey.
Yeah I think its wind aswell.....its almost like he didnt want to drink because he associated his bottle with pain.
I will see how he goes today on the Heinz Nuture for hungry babies, I will soon know at his next bottle if its the formula or teeth or whatever.
If he still fusses I will take him the the doctors to get his ears and throat checked.

It can take a while to get all the formula out of his system so you may not see a change for a couple of days. We find S26 really good.

Poor boy.
Hannah was really dribbly and had rashy red cheeks at about 3 months. We were convinced it was teeth, but she stopped that after a couple of weeks and she's still as gummy as anything.
I hope he feels better soon!
I wouldn't have the first clue about formula, but from what I've read and what Stacey's said, it makes sense to be the changes in formula.

Yeah thats what I thought aswell stacey, I will know by thursday if its the formula or his teeth.
Charly-Yeah thats what I said(in regards to cadens red cheeks and dribbling) to Adam cos he is convinced its cadens teeth bit my mummy instinct says its not....I dont know I just have a feeling. He really sounds as though he is fussing because he doesnt like the formula....

What size teat are you using for Caden? Both of my girls got very fussy and on and off the bottle when they were ready to move to the next size - they get frustrated that it is too slow. Might be worth checking it?
However with both the next size was a bit fast so the change over took a while and we were swapping over teats halfway through a feed (very anoying as it means double sterilizing!)

He has a #2 teat on the Tommee Tippee and they are quite a fast flow, so its definitly not the teat size cos I can hear him swallowing sufficent mouthfuls of milk.
It was the teat size a month or so ago when he was fussing, but this time he is in pain, going by his cries and pulling his legs up.
Thanks for the advice tho

When my youngest was a newborn she'd breastfeed for a few minutes and pull off and cry like caden.
She was diagnosed with silent reflux. She was soon changed to formula and we put her on AR...and never looked back..oh she was also put on meds but the formula was the thing that helped in end.

Sheena this sounds like exactly what happened when I tried to change Ollie to SMA. We went back to Heinz nurture plus and he is fine again.
It could be reflux - that's what it sounds like anyway. If he's happy with the other formula you can always stick with that!

Yeah he just drank his thrid bottle with no problems again, so I am 99% sure it was the formula, must have been giving him a tummy ache as it hit his gut.
Poor boy! But he seems happy as on nuture plus, he just downed another 200mls!

I didn't mean anything about him being bottle fed, I was just saying that first off my baby was breastfed,,,but she was also changed to bottle at about 6 weeks and the problem still continued until we changed to AR.
I'm glad you have figured out what the problem was.
