You could always get a hot facecloth and use it to soak the breastpad so you effectively soak it off, that will prevent the pain of pulling it off if it has stuck a little.
I'm using the Purelan only on the areola atm as I have really dry, exczema like skin there but the nipple itself is fine, but lil miss is big enough and experienced enough that she doesn't slip off with it.

Chonny, pull the breast pad off as far as you can without pain, then squeeze a little purelan or whatever ointment you have onto the nipple then slide it off once its loosened its grip

Dh arrived home & David was in bed but not settled so i got him back u & handed him to DH so i could have my shower. i soaked the pad off in the shower. Also tried to massage some lumps out but very unsucessfully. was feeling so sore that when i got out & D wanted feeding, i just couldn't bare to try. I put the shield on & that was bad enough. I decided to be a woos (sp?) & express as much as i could. i got 60mls again. It hurt, but not as much you see. Tried with a spoon to feed it to David but he was just getting too worked up so i caved & got a bottle teat out. i know i know, mw said not to, but it can't hurt as a one off. anyways, he then guzzled bout 40mls. was much more satisfied & did big burps. put him to bed but still had pain so offered more milk. another 10mls. so total 50mls, remembering he had already had the LHS an hour previous. Can i just add that i cried the entire time..... Anyways, got him into bed & he is STILL asleep. Hasn't slept solidly as had trouble breathing thru his nose, but never woke for a feed. i wore the nipple formers to bed & don't feel solid this am so hoping i can get him on to feed.

wow what a big sleep for a little fellow!
You poor thing, just remember you are doing the best you can for your little boy he is getting breast milk what way it comes doesnt really matter. I know the pain and its horrible, almost worse than labour. keep persevering and it will come right. I think you are doing amazingly considering you have a 2 year old as well!

he is starting to stir a bit more now so i think i'll get him up. otherwise i'm going to get too full to feed. my pump isn't overly great so i think if i can't feed him then i may go to papakura & use their pump, we'll see.
that's what i figure simone, i figure if he is only get one feed or part of a feed from the bottle, & still getting the breast for the LHS side, then it will help him to be ok. just have to make sure that i use a newborn teat! i think i used a number 2 last night, was a bit fast, maybe that's why he's still asleep, got too much. over fed him?

na if you overfed him he would have vomited! he was probably just really settled from your mega milk! Now that your feeling more relaxed your milk is probably thicker, seems to be how it works
I wouldnt worry about all the teat stuff for now, concentrate on getting the nipple healed. On the plus side at least you will have some freedom if he will drink breast milk from the bottle!

update on us: well, mw just came & i am now about to go & pack to go into the birthing unit to get help with healing my nipple. she says it looks bad & we wanna see if we can get it fixed over the weekend. she so lovely my mw. so onto it. so i'm off for a "HOLIDAY". Really sad bout leaving Vincent with DH but i know my mum is around. i think i'm sad bout leaving V at all. lol. how weird. lol. but hey, if we can get it healed then awesome. mw thinks the steam machine at papakura may help draw the infection out. there is a name to what it is apparently. lets see i guess. i just hope its nice there. going to go get some dvd's now to keep me company..... hope i wont get too lonely

well i am so glad my mw is on to it. i have what is called a bleb. will google later to find more info, but basically milk duct that has blister covering it. OUCH! looked like a boil on Friday & looked like a deep ulcer on sunday. looking heaps smaller now. finally came home last night. Am back to using a shield, bigger one tho so it won't do more damage. & i have done two feeds on my own now. still need to gain more confidence, but without the shields i would still be in the unit.

Good on you, keep it up.
Although I have to say when the MW's kept saying make it to 8 weeks, I thought that was the longest time and I wasn't going to get there. We are now 10 weeks and Joel is fully BF, no top up bottles or anything else for 2 weeks now. It can and will get easier it just takes a while.

i had this with my eldest & it didn't heal until he was bout 5weeks old. i managed to fully wean off the shields by 6 weeks or so. At the moment i think another three days or so with the shield & then i will be brave enough to try without. It was just far too sore trying to latch him & then was like razors. Altho once we would finally get him on it would be ok. Anyways, it's healing heaps more now that i'm using the shields. Much smaller today than it was two days ago. If anyone is interested, it's called a bleb. If you google it, it comes up with the explanation etc.
