Topic: Getting desperate!! Posted: 21 October 2008 at 7:27am |
Argghghghghg!!!! I am absolutely at my wit's end with Cian at the moment -- he's had a cold but getting over it now but if he's not sleeping he just cries and cries and cries.... He's fed and dry and winded so no real reason for it that I can see and the only way he seems to settle is if we walk him round and round the house, but I'm exhausted and can't spend hours on my feet like that anymore!!
anyone got any suggestions?? I've tried putting him down and just walking away but all that happens is he gets himself really worked up

I am sorry - I don't have any ideas as such because I am going through a similar thing at the moment. I just try to distract him when I sit down by leaning him back on my legs so he can look at me, and then just talking heaps and heaps to him (and loudly too!!). Works some of the time.
Other times I have had to put him down and let him grumble.
Your boy is gorgeous by the way.

if you cant see a reason it doesnt mean there isnt one. maybe ge the docs to check it out in case it is his ears, esp if he has had a cold...

that's whats been worrying me Bizzy - that there's something wrong and I just don't know what it is!
We were at the docs yesterday and she said ears and throat look fine, chest sounds good so he's definately coming to the end of his cold. I wonder if it's just congestion?
either way, I just gave him some paracetemol and that seemed to calm him down enough to get to sleep... don't really want to be doing that all day though!

Sorry to hear that Cian is being trying at the moment. I don't really have any solutions for you but if you are really tired maybe you could spend the day in at plunket or something.
Oh just saw you are in Ohope so not sure what plunket provides there.

there is a good video called happiest baby you can get it on the sleep store website it talks about the 5 s....you can use them seperatly or all together to settle a baby under 3 months old....they are
sucking (dummy)
swaddling
Shhhhing in their ear (louder than their cry) I found this works for Jayden but you have to do it right up to their ear and it has to be louder than their crying or they cant hear it
and there is a position that you can lay them like on your arm with them facing down (like one of those winding positions) and shhh or rock them or pat their back like this or on their side on your arm and the next one was a movement like a gentle jiggle - hard to explain :) quicker than rocking them but of course not a vigerous shake! if you get what I mean
all the best!

What happens if you put hum in a pram / pushchair and rock him vigourously over a bump for a while.
Oh...the other thing you could try (It worked like magic for us) is...if you have a bassinette that you can rock from the foot end rather than side to side. You just take hold of the end wherre their feet are and lift it up and down rhythmically just as you would if you were rocking from side to side. I don't know why it works but Ollie would stop crying within seconds when we did this - I don't think he was as upset as it sounds like Cian is but it' might be worth a try.
Good luck...

If the paracetamol helped that suggests there might be a pain/discomfort source somewhere. If he's still a little congested it might make him grouchy. I find saline drops help lil miss when she's blocked up, 0.1ml of saline in each nostril. You can get the saline stuff from the pharmacy and a 1ml syringe to administer it.
Otherwise have you tried wearing him? It never did much for Mercedes but Maya, Sienna and Chiara all like/d being worn, Maya in a front pack, Sienna in a sling and Chiara in the Moby wrap. It gives you back the use of your arms and helps distribute the weight evenly so you don't get a sore back.
