Hi Ladies,

I am going back to work soon and have started to wean DS. I was going to wean him completely but now I have decided I would like to keep BFing him morning and evening.

He will have formula during the day as I do not want to express at home or at work.

Some advice I have had is to:

-BF him in the morning after solids so that would be about 6.30am-7am.

-Then he will have morning tea/lunch/afternoon tea at daycare.

-Then at night solids for dinner about 6.30pm, then BF.

Has anyone else done this? What times do you BF and how has it worked or not worked?

TIA

I am still b/f Ella and work 2 days a week. The days I am at work Ella has b/fast around 7-7.30ish and then has a b/f staight after. And in the evening I give her a b/f just before bedtime. During the day while I am work she started off having formula in a bottle and now has switched to having cows milk in a sipper cup. I have done this since she was around 10 months and have never had any problems.

I'm still feeding Caleb morning and night (before and after work). He wakes really wanting a feed so has one about 6.30am then has breakfast at about 7-7.30. He has another usually when I get home about 4.30pm just before his dinner at 5pm. Often he'll want one last one before bed, about 8pm.

You are meant to BF after solids but the timings haven't ever worked for us so I've ended up doing it the other way around.

I returned to work when Kryssi was 8 1/2 mos. Initially I fed her at 8am (usual feed time for her), her 12pm feed was expressed, and then I fed her again when I got home about 4pm. After a while it was hurting to express because I had so little milk so we went onto formula in the middle of the day, and eventually all formula. Worked quite well, really.

I think it will be easier/quicker to BF him in the morning and night as it is quicker than getting a bottle ready. Which will be handy in the morning when I am trying to leave on time.

Mum2ella - do you give formula after dinner then a BF just before bed? I tried that but DS would be too full from the bottle, not want much from me, and then I was sooo sore the other night I had to get up to express.

Busymum - sounds like it did work well, sort of selfweaned gradually.

He really wants milk first thing so I may just keep to that too Jaz. Just don't tell Plunket

It is good to hear how you ladies do it and get on as I know it sounds silly, but it is sort of daunting try to get the times etc right.

I went back to work when my son was 9mths. I was intially bfing  in my lunch break and dropped that after 4wks and went with the morning and night BF. Because he was always demand feed he used to like to bfeed as soon as I picked him up and would be on and off for the rest of the night. The morning one became  a struggle as well bcos he liked a good 40min feed as soon as he woke up, which I didnt have the time for in the morning esp when I needed to get 3 kids and myself out the door. I tried to limit it in the morning and at night but this always turned into a battle so at 15mths I fully weaned him.

I totally agree with you that bf will definitely be a lot quicker as its natures fast food lol

Star- no Ella just has a b/f (she only used to get formula if I wasn't around). She eats dinner around 4.45ish and then has a b/f just before bedtime at 6.30

also just wanted to say that you will find that your supply will adjust according to demand. I was at first worried that my milk supply would drop, since she wasn't having a midday feed a couple of days a week.....but it just adjusted, and I always seemed to have enough milk  when she wanted it.

When she was younger I would find that I was a bit full when I came home from work, so sometimes gave her a b/f staight after dinner and then a smaller feed an hr later just before bed. But now it's fine..

Although I wasn't going to work I fBF cath first then she would have a bit of food about an hour after that.

I found it more convenient to do it this way as it was nice for DH to bring her to me first thing in the morning as it felt more relaxed for me to just look at her and be with her as soon as she had woken up and been changed by DH.

Her breastfeed at night was the last 'meal' that she had before bedtime. I soon found though that it became more of a comfort thing than real feed and within about a month she wanted nothing more to do with me and wanted her bottle!

Haha Star, no I won't tell Plunket. I forgot to add, I had to express once or twice a day for the first couple of weeks until my supply dropped a bit. I'm still pretty full morning and after work which is probably why feeding at those times suit me. Your body adapts though and you'll make milk to match your needs.

I didnt go back to work or anything, but when DD was only having 2 BF's a day at around 12 months, I used to feed her after her breakfast then again before she went to bed.

Good luck with going back to work
