Hi,
Just read back on previous posts on this topic and it sounds really worthwhile.
This website, babytalk.co.nz offers online courses to teach parents the signs etc.
Has anyone tried the online course?
Is it any good?
TIA

We didnt do the online course, we organised a group course with some friends and our coffee group. It was a good course and we learnt some handy signs. TBH we havent used it as much as we prob should have, but he does sign bottle, finished and bath!

Sim Sam how much did it cost to organise a group course? Most in my antinatal class coffee group are quite interested in this and i think i could also get some other friends into it too. Just wondering if it would be worthwhile

I wouldn't mind doing a workshop, but there aren't any in my area in the next few months, according to the website.
Wish I had a coffee group

SimSam do you think it would be easy enough to pick up the signs from a written guide, rather than in person?
I would like to get started asap, but I guess I could wait if it is better to learn from a teacher

From what ive read its not too important how you do the signs and wether they're exactly right its just important that you do them consistently (you and your partner and anyone else doing it around your child should all use the same sign). I got out the sign language for hearing babies from the library - i found it quite good and we were gonna start but saw on the website that theres one here this weekend so are gonna try go. But the book was clear enough by itself. You should see if you could borrow it from the library. you can also buy it from the babytalk website

I guess all that matters is that both you and baby understand the message, whether signed 'correctly' or not.

Thanks Angel, I didn't think to look at the library

Hi, just went to the babytalk workshop. It was very good. My husband came too and enjoyed it - meant he didn't have to read the book. I was quite impressed. I would be worthwhile seeing if you could get a group of people together who would be interested in it. THen contact them and see if they would do a workshop for you.

I just have the book - have been using 3-4 basic signs (when we remember) for a couple of weeks now. DD hasn't started any, but has just started reaching for her cup and has a drink when I sign & say "drink"!

For us the book is clear enough, (I just copied a few of the first signs out and stuck them on the fridge to remind us to use them), but it would be a fun activity to do with a coffee group.

That's a good idea tamiem, to put the signs on the wall or fridge.

Only a couple of weeks, and your DD already recognises a sign, that's so cool! They sure do pick up things fast.

I'm waiting patiently for the book to be returned to the library so I can check it out

I learned it from the book. It is so great and I highly recommend it.

Learning from the book was easy.

We also got a DVD from the library - it had that famous deaf actress in it, and DD learned a few new signs from just watching it once.

DD signs help, water, finished, giraffe, banana, more, helicopter, baby, please, orange, hot, hurt, umm that's all I can think of now...
