Topic: BF and thrush :( Posted: 16 June 2009 at 5:06pm |
I am finally on the way to getting my BF issues sorted, but about 2 weeks ago have started getting sharp, razor like pain in my boobs during feeding and for up to an hour afterwards.
The lovely LC at Plunket checked H's latch, which was perfect, no damage to nipples or the areola, so thinks it might be thrush... and because the pain is quite deep she thinks it could have spread to the ducts.
Has anyone had this before? Is there anything else you can do in addition to the creams?

I ended up having 4 lots of thrush over 5 months, and the pain was so bad it felt like it was spreading all the way round my back as well . I was given some cream...sorry don't have the tube anymore but it worked well. (was actually given to me by a friend who got it from her dr and had finished with it) I "think" it was Daktorin or something like that. I also had mastitis and had ab's for that but don't know if that affected the thrush.
I know how painful it is and I hope it clears for you...unfortunately for me I couldn't take the pain anymore and ended up giving up bf at 5 months and have been fine since.

You can use gentian violet to treat thrush, but you have to put up with purple nipples and an infant with a purple mouth while treating it. GV is non-toxic, and a excellent way to treat thrush.
But the cream is the best thing to treat thrush if don't want to use gentian violet. There is nothing else you can do to speed up the healing process.
If the pain is deep, it maybe vasospasms. I had them for about 4 months, and initially my GP and LC thought it was thrush, but after treatment and inspection of my nipples after a feed, it was diagnosed as vasospasms.

a friend of mine had thrush while BF, her son ended up getting it in his mouth too, poor wee lad. she took some asidophilus (sp) tablets from the health shop, which really helped her.
keep at it, its not nice, but is honestly the best thing for baby is to keep going with the BF.

Iv had it about 3 or 4 times, its horrible. Hate the stabbing pain. Also Brennan got it in his mouth so needed medicine for that. Very tricky to get it in to him with out it going everywhere.
All i can say is once you have been to the docs, keep the cream on hand so if you feel the tingling again then you can get on top of it before it gets too bad.
I also have just started taking a pro-biotic, because iv had about 3 lots of antibiotics (hence the thrush) and we havent had a bout since taking it (but then again havnt been on antibiotics)

I second the probiotic thing as well (I can't believe that I forgot about that)
