okay so mr 11wks is only just managing to get 140mls (we make up 100ml bottle that sits in the fridge and we then when we make up his bottles at 100mls and put in a 20ml top up, so ends up at 140ml bottle, i have also tried making up 150ml water (which ends up making 180,) but we ending up wasting the formula)...plunket have been doing weekly visits as they are concerned at home much he ISNT drinking, and my doctor has said that he wants to keep a close eye on him as well, due to being under the 3% mark....so mr is demanding a feed every 2.5 - 4 hours (depending on the day), and is sleeping from 9.30/10pm-5.30ish in the morning, (ive tried arguing that my baby knows how much he wants), and that miss 3 did excatly the same, but no one is listening to me...

so...
now im starting to get stressed that hes not getting enough...its bad enough that breastfeeding didnt work out for us, to now have ppl telling me the im not giving him enough formula (i do realise that i cant force him to eat what he doesnt want), i suppose im just looking for reassurance that im doing fine...arrgghhh

i have also pointed
out to the plunket and doctor that miss 3 was under the 3% mark for ages, and then under the 50% for over a year, and now at 3yrs 4mths she is now over the 75%, arrgghh i just wish they would listen to me...he is such a happy baby, so contented and full of smiles and is talking to us, and trying to roll over etc, so hes doing just fine, i just wish they wouldnt stress me so

Kazzle - it is YOUR baby, you know him and have gone through it with your DD. Just nod and say 'yes, we could try that' and then do what you know is best. Every child is different and those charts are very generous.

Huge . You are doing a fantastic job, and deep down you know that - trust yourself .

this is what you do when they start going on....

smile, nod, go hmmmmm and put your mummy face on.   If you are satisfied he is fine then just go on as you are... dont even bother tryin to argue with them because they dont know how to take the individual into the equation at all, to them it is all just numbers!

Try not to stress Kazzle. Does what you are doing feel right? It sounds like it to me! You have the experience of being through this before with Miss 3 - and things are FINE.

I would only get concerned if he was unhealthy and unhappy. Doesn't sound like he is though!

Or you can be like me and just tell Plunket to go jump. LOL Okay, I didn't tell them I just refused to return phone calls and they finally got the message.

I had 8 MONTHS of plunket telling me DS2 didn't weigh enough, despite explaining numerous times why I wasn't worried, why they should get off my back and how I'd already done this once with DS1 who did the same things and that there was nothing wrong with him either (DS1 is now at 95-97% for height and weight for his age).    So the last time Plunket saw him was at 15 months when he had just broken the 8kg mark and he's now about 12kgish I reckon. I seem to have toddlers who pile on weight and babies not so much.

If they are meeting milestones, you've got the requisite number of we/dirty nappies, they seem content most of the time then it shouldn't matter how much or how little they weigh! I always ask myself that if I had no idea how much he weighed and I looked at HIM would I be worried; if the answer was no I put on the mummy face and smiled and nodded and got out as fast as I could. Do NOT challenge as this only gets their back up, hard to do I know but they look at the graph and ignore the baby which IMO is just plain stupid.

I also did some silent and secret (from Plunket anyway)experiments and I got proved right and then I knew they were talking rubbish....made me feel heaps better. LOL The only good thing was that unlike when I had DS1 and we were on weekly weighs, when I said I was only willing to weigh him MONTHLY they said that was fine because they don't put on weight every week, sometimes they stay the same or a lose a bit which is why looking at monthly growth is a better indicator. Plus she never cared that he had gained length or head circumference, just whether he'd put on any weight...GRRRRRR!

Sorry, that wasn't supposed to turn into a rant about me.......but as you can see, been there, done that got the t-shirt twice but handled both situations differently.

Hey Kaz. Jackson still doesn't drink more than 140ml per bottle. As you're probably aware, we've had all sorts of problems getting him to drink enough.

BUT! I think a big part of the problem was the pressure I was put under by Plunket and our local nurse - who both told me to "try harder", "feed more" and make him take more. And because I was a nervous first time mum, I did try harder, and harder and harder and now I firmly believe that's the reason Jackson is very food averse.

If I could go back and change things and just let Jackson be I would in a heartbeat. And I don't think we'd be in this position.

Not saying that this will happen to you, but there's something to be said for letting kids decide how much they want to eat and when. Just like the others said, watch the baby not the numbers. I am sure you know what you're doing and you know your baby best.

Even my paediatrician says that the obsession with weight in NZ is really out of balance with what really matters. I am trying hard to listen to him as well!

HUGS!

Had plunket yesterday, and Cory has started to plateau with his weight and growth, so back to the doctors on monday for a referral to the peads to see if there is anything underlining that.

We also switched him to AR formula last night as recommended by plunket, and although he is only drinking slightly more (has gone from drinking 80mls a bottle to 120mls), he is still spilling heaps, but it doesnt seem to hurt him....they think Cory has silent reflux but its so hard to diagnosis, especially since he is such a happy little boy...who is sleeping 9 hours overnight (so cant really be that hungry imo).

Just like everyone has said go with your instincts, I hated the pressure I was under when Fin was little about weight gain, in those early weeks, they practically sent me insane.

I think if he is happy, content and is eating something, then its all good and he will sort himself out.

My mum, who is english was shocked at how much help/interference we got here and was convinced I would feel better when we didn't see plunket/midwives so often and she was right, my wee man just was a little drinker for months and then all of a sudden he started eating and then he got huge.

Hope the Dr's goes ok and they start giving you some space.

Silent reflux could well contribute. Jackson had reflux in a bad way but, aside from feeding, he was NEVER unhappy. His reaction to feeding seemed so polar opposite to how he was normally. Some babies are just easy going.

It's worth ruling out.

Hey Kazzle. Just thought I would add my thoughts. Amelia has not put on weight for about a month and I was getting a little worried. She has been happy though and sometimes sleeping through. We saw out GP on Monday and he made me feel a whole heap better.

Basically he looked at her cheeks, tummy and thighs and said that she had a good covering and since she was happy she was getting enough. He told me to space out her feeds a little though to try and get her to take a bit more and also to trai her tummy to expect food only at certain times. He said that we (as adults and children) only have food at certain times of the day and you need to train the stomach to want food at those times. Made sense to me!

Anyway Amelia is only 4.5kgs at 10.5 weeks. She had a plateau of 4.2kgs for a month which had me a little worried until I talked to my GP.

Listen to yourself and your baby. I think getting him checked by the ped is a good idea but to be honest I cancelled our last plunket visit because the timing didn't suit. I weigh her at home to get an idea but don't worry too much as long as she is happy. Please read your first post again. It seems to me that you have listed a lot of reasons as to why he is eating and weighing what he does and they are perfectly reasonable reasons. Think about what advice you would give someone like me in the same situation then take it yourself. Feel free to PM me any time. Our situations are quite similar as DD#1 did the same thing and was formula fed from the same age. DD#2 is similar but still bf and I was even thinking of going to ff to try to get her to gain more weight but have put that off for now. Hang in there and keep smiling.

i have done a lot of thinking about this and bascially once plunket has come this week (3mth check), i dont want to see her again until the 5mth check.

we have changed formulas and we have played around with the teats and suddenly he is drinking a bit more, going to keep my appointment with the doctor jsut for peace of mind.

but then im just going to let him go...he has for a week now slept from 9ish-7ish and just so happy

Kazzle...I had the same issue in my pregnancies...I knew I carried small but the second midwife went on & on at me no matter how much I reassured her & showed her Alia's books. In the end I did the smiling & went along with what they wanted cause it was easier.

Both my kids were like skinned rabbits & I was told as long as there is padding on the wrist they are fine. I don't know how much Cooper drinks as he's fully breast feed, but I'd imagine it's not overly much. I'm also lucky that my plunket nurse is great & is happy as long as he's got wet nappies & is making small gains.

Yay for Cory sleeping through the night....We don't have that here at 7 months, but then I guess he has to feed around the clock to make sure he gets enough.

Definitely go to the paed for peace of mind & if you know Rhiannon was exactly the same then the chances are he's just following in his sisters foot steps.

I had a problem with plunket after aidan was born
they use to tell me he had to have a certian amount and even told me I had to change his scooping (he was on 1 scoop per 50mls - special prem formula which the hospital prescribed!)
told me to change it 1 scoop per 70-80mls so he drinks more
well I told his ped and she wrote the plunket a not so nice letter telling her to NEVER change his formula prescription especially a hospital one!
yeah well only seen her once after that and she tried to do it again so never seen her again

thanks guys....i actually sat down last night and plotted Rhiannon and Corys weights in an excel chart, and what do you know, they are both almost identical (cory is about 200gms behind in weight), but hey he is longer...lol

now that we have his teats sorted as well, hes drinking between 100 -160mls formula depending on how he is feeling.

i just get so frustrated as i feeling like im doing so well and that my babies are doing great, then along comes someone and they plant a tiny seed of doubt into my mind and thats it...i just stress.

whats worse is that it only happens with my babies....im normally such a sure, confident person when it comes to everyday life, oh well part and parcel of being a mummy i say

Hi Kazzle,

As a baby I was under the recommended weight for Plunket's standards, my mum was made to take me to specialists to find the problem...well there was no problem with me I just grew slower than other babies.

Well now I have my own little miss and she is the same, always under the recommended weight line but she is happy and sleeps through the night and has no problems, she is just tiny.

Isn't it funny how a small thing like teats could be the reason lol. Don't let anyone tell you how your baby should be.

I hope Plunket back off now they can be very irritating people sometimes.

well just got back from the doctors, and Cory has only put on 50gms in 4 days, so he just wants a second opinion so is sending off a referral to the hospital.

the doctor thinks that Cory is fine just slow on the weight gain and just wants to be sure (which is fair enough)...so back to them on tuesday next week and hopefully will have heard about an appointment by then
