A couple of questions:

1. If your breastfed baby seems to want to feed constantly / frequently - do you suspect growth spurt OR a sore tummy / bad snack/snooze pattern?

2. How long does it take your newborn to settle for naps?   Do you have to return to them many times to resettle them?

3. My 3 week old won't settle for her first nap of the day. This is the same every day. Any thoughts as to why? I can't work out what it is about the morning that causes the issues.

I'm definitely no expert but...

1. If it was rare behaviour, I'd say growth spurt and ride it out, but if constant, like longer than a few days it could be something else. Sounds like yr girl is hungry though. Breastmilk not enough perhaps? Are you still under care of midwife and can you ask her?

2. When DS was a newborn he was all over the show and not a day sleeper. Aside from the rare occasions he went down quietly or fell asleep on me, he would have to cry himself to sleep as he was overtired. My going in only fuelled his tears so it was best to leave him.

3. My DS STILL has some issues with his first nap of the day, no idea why.

I'm remembering the newborn times now, man... really hard work... and no manual but lots of opinions. All the best eh.

Elias has problems with the first sleep of the day too .. Im terrible and either hold him and check my emails and do some work or I put him back into bed with me (depending on the time.)

Oh and growth spurt .. and not long, but I cheat and rock him to sleep (which takes 5-10 mins) and then put him down.

i think it depends. isyour baby only feeding for a short time, maybe a few minutes? then it could be snack/snooze. if it is for a normal length of time then it could be growth spurt. what time of day does this happen? if its at night then it could be cluster feeding. Ben is permanently attached to me from about 6.30/7pm till 9.30/10pm.

2. How long does it take your newborn to settle for naps?   Do you have to return to them many times to resettle them?
it varies and sometimes i have to return and other times i don't

3. My 3 week old won't settle for her first nap of the day. This is the same every day. Any thoughts as to why? I can't work out what it is about the morning that causes the issues.
sorry can't help there as Ben is very hard to settle in the afternoons and usually only cat naps

i have finally learnt to go with the flow as things will likely get themselves sorted after 2-3mths. All babies are different and they seem to change constantly to begin with. good luck

A couple of questions:

1. If your breastfed baby seems to want to feed constantly / frequently - do you suspect growth spurt OR a sore tummy / bad snack/snooze pattern?

How old is she? I would think in the first few weeks its fairly normal to want to feed all the time. #1 may not have done that, so it is a bit of a rude shock when #2 does things different! I would suspect a growth spurt, otherwise you could try waking her if she is falling asleep at the breast and offering her more and if she dosne't take it, she has had enough. That's a good way of checking snack/snooze. Sore tummy would probably go along with bad green fizzy poos and being sick, i would imagine. A good way of "managing" a grizzly baby I found was to wear her. It was the only way I could have any sanity with #2.

2. How long does it take your newborn to settle for naps?   Do you have to return to them many times to resettle them?

I found it often took me over an hour to get Charlotte to settle anfdthen it was almost time for another feed! Argh! She grew out of that in about a month

3. My 3 week old won't settle for her first nap of the day. This is the same every day. Any thoughts as to why? I can't work out what it is about the morning that causes the issues.

Maybe she just dosen't want to sleep then? Argh! Must be annoying!

Apparently as a baby I didn't nap but was happy to watch the world go by. Mum got all the talks from plunket about the importance of naps but in the end decided to let me be. If I was put down for a nap I'd scream, if I was allowed to stay up I'd quietly watch whatever was going on. LOL and I'm surprised I get kids who don't like to nap ROFL!

Ashley is 3 weeks she fed almost all day yesterday but has been back to a good pattern today. She's put on just over 1kg in 14 days so I guess she is growing lots!!!!!!!!!!!
