Stupid question maybe but Ashley has not been a good day sleeper until last week (4 months old)

she is currently lying in her cot after a nap wide awake just yabbering to herself or just gazing at something.

How long do you leave them like this? she seems perfectly happy

i will likely go and get her soon but just wondering for the future

I would make a decision as to how long the "ideal " nap was eg 90 minutes, and if she woke up before that time I would leave her as long as she was happy until the time was up.

Thanks - i just went and picked her up as she smelt really bad of poop but in hindsight she was perfectly happy so could have left her longer.

She was really only a day cat napper until a week ago when she just decided that she could go down while still awake and doze off without me rocking her - an absolute blessing for me!

We have always done as flutterby suggested we set a nap time, for us thats 2 hours in the afternoon and if they wake before that as long as they aren't crying we leave them there till the time is up. Usually they sleep the whole 2 hours (or even more!) but occasionally they wake 20mins earlier but are always happy to just lie there and babble to themselves or each other. I think if they're crying it's different though.

When Hayden was very little, like about 3 mths, he would sometimes wake early from his nap and just lay there staring or babble happily and I'd always leave him be, especially if he had cut a nap short. If baby is happy then I think awake in cot with low stimulation still counts as rest time and I believe it helps them realise that bed is a nice place to be and they dont need to be 'rescued' from it as soon as they wake. Of course as soon as the babbles turn unhappy then I would get baby up. He is 13mths now and we do the same really, let him chat for a bit until the tone changes and that tells us he is ready to get up. Its a blessing at 6am just to get that extra 20/30mins in bed!!!
