My baby is torturing me !
He latched on the other day and it hurt so bad I had to pull him off straight away and my nipple was bleeding I've been avoiding feeding him on that side ,im scared of how much it will hurt , so i've been hand expressing to keep my supply up .
Now the little darling has hurt my other nipple , I can see where the skin has been pulled off a bit and im dreading feeding him .

Its so tempting to say screw it , i'll bottle feed, but because Im lazy , and because I really love bf'ing, I don't want to give up , unless I really really need to.

Im figuring that for some reason hes not latching properly , I dont understand why , after all this time of feeding properly ,hes now decided to use mummy's boob as a form of torture .
Would it be worth while seeing a lactation consultant , how much are they usually etc ?
Or can anyone give any advice on getting them to open wider etc ? im wondering if thats the problem

any advice would be great , TIA

maybe he can feel his teeth coming thru.... or hes just not that interested in the boobie for those times he bit you... could be a sign that he is finished his feed and just wants to play.

Thanks Fats, I'll do all three of those suggestions tomorrow

Deb , I wondered if it could have anything to do with teething , he has been extra dribbly lately , and is trying to eat his fist most of the time .....

MrsMojo recommended soothing them with warm flannel , I'll try that tonight and see how I go , wish me luck !

Can you use a pump until they heal?

I hired a LC and it cost me $60 for the first home visit and $25 for additional visits.

There's a free clinic at Botany every Friday, with a lactation consultant/midwife. Will see if I can find the details for you.

Ugh, this wee wench went thru stages of torturing me - at one stage I was feeding her and she pulled off and there was blood dripping down the corner of her mouth a-la-vampire

I found Purelan worked wonders when they were cracked, and if it's really sore - see your doc coz it could be infected. I've contracted a few infections in my breastfeeding life, the most recent was about a month ago when I got Strep A

nipple shields while they heal or until the issue stops. Josh practically tore my whole nipple off before he was a week old (very strong sucker as noone could fault the latch/technique). I am still traumatized by it so any other kids i have will have to feed through nipple shields cos there is no way i will go thru that again.

Are nipple shields a one size fits all situation (sorry , probably a very dumb question ! )

Ty has white coating on his lips that is hard to get off , and is fussy when hes feeding off my breast , his latch looks fine , im wondering if it could be a small dose of thrush ?

no, not at all, Kelly. Thrush comes from an overgrowth of candida which we have growing naturally in our bodies.
You may or may not have an "itch" "down there" or discharge or a bit of a whiff. HAvig in "down there" dosen't always mean you get it in the nips or vise versa, either.
Sometimes thrush sparks up again when sex starts again and can be agrivated by condoms/lubes etc.
Also some medications esp antibiotics can affect your gut, killing all the good bacteria, and, yep, here comes thrush. You can try to include some natural unsweetened yogurt in your diet to counter this and keep gut healthty. This is also a really good way to get rid of bad breath as well (not that I know if you have that, lol)
One thing that can mean re infection is not being on top of everyone to wash and dry their hads correctly, Men are BAD for this, if he dosen't wash his hads properly, make him hand sanitise all the time, lol. True story!! Others can be the carriers and not get infected.
Yu need to see a Dr or mudwife to get antifungal.
Hope that info helps.

i assume all nipple shields are a one size fits all thing im not sure mum brought them for me when i was finding feeding way to sore to continue. They are pretty big especially the nipple bit i worried josh wouldnt be able to fit it in his mouth but it didnt seem to bother him. My nipple was a bit too damaged that even taking my bra off was extremely painful so i only tried them once but really wish i had had them around for when it started to get painful.
