Topic: A *TMI* question about baby poo... Posted: 28 September 2009 at 8:21am |
Just wondering if other BF'ing bubs Corbans age (4.5mths) still have the BF'ing seedy poo?
Ever since he was on antibiotics about a month ago his poo has been really runny, funny coloured and not smelling all that fresh! When he was little he had that lovely (!) non-smelling golden coloured seedy poo, then he was started on gaviscon at 8 weeks old so it became pastey and not so seedy then when he was on antibiotics I stopped giving him gaviscon (too much of a mission trying to get everything in before his feeds) and haven't given it since as his spilling seems to improved heaps so thought it would have gone back to how it was before? Was thinking about taking him to the Dr but he seems otherwise happy, healthy and growing well so would feel a bit silly!
Sorry for the detailed description of my child's bowels! I did warn you...!

JJ still had 'lovely' poos until about 6 months... but then we didn't have any meds to complicate things so I dunno! Sorry! (Just didn't want to read and run as it looks like a few people have read and consigned you to the too hard basket )

I wonder if the antibotics have upset the "flora" balance in his tum? Might take a few more weeks to come right? If he's still fully breastfeed they should go back to the seedy stuff I would imagine?

baby poos are interesting arent they? No! I am serious...I am obsessed with James' poos!
I agree that his "flora" might be out....ie the good bacteria. You could try a probiotic (take it yourself or give it to him..we are doing this at the moment).
James has had the lovely smelling poos right up till 2 weeks ago when all of a sudden they went hard and "man-like". They smelt like Tom's poos. I figured this was because he had upped his solid intake. Imagine my suprise when yesterday they were green and runny....then today back to yellow, sweet smelling niceness.
I guess what I am saying......who knows??? Baby poo is a mystery!

I'm with Aliasmum, it can take a while to come right. My DS is now on formula, but the two times he's been on antibotics, it's take a couple of weeks for his BMs to go back to "normal" after the course has been finished.

I reckon it would be the antibiotics too. They can do funny things to your system (both DH and I have been on them recently.)
Having said that Gus's poo changes too - normally it's still the sweet, seedy kind, but then occasionally it will be runnier and smell kind of acidic, sometimes be a bit green, sometimes frothy... I don't worry too much about it though since he seems happy and healthy otherwise ...

When you say a funny colour..is it green? Because all those things you mentioned can be a sign of getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk.
It is probally something to do with the antibiotics though. It may pay to mention it to the Dr?

Nope not green. A dark browny mustard colour
I would have thought breastmilk with all it's goodness would have been enough to recoat the gut etc??
Where do you get probiotics from? Health shop? Can anyone recommend a brand?

Hey I personally havent used them myself, but if you scroll down this page you will find links and info for a variety of probiotics available.
You can order them online, or possibly ask your local chemist to order them in for you.
