QuoteReplyTopic: Keep dreamfeeding 9 mth old? Posted: 03 November 2009 at 1:56pm
I need some wisdom! I have been dreamfeeding my 9 month old for ages but recently have been experimenting with dropping it, in the hope that she will just keep sleeping. If I don't dreamfeed her, she will keep sleeping from 7.30 till about 3.30, but sometimes she will wake at 1-ish and then 4-ish! If I DO dreamfeed her, she still seems to wake around 4.30 - like this morning, and seems to need feeding! I figured that if she could go for 8 hrs from when I first put her down, that she SHOULD be able to go from 10-ish until the morning. But no...? Last night I dreamfed her after 10, then she woke at 4.30. My husband tried to get her back to sleep and tried giving her water but an hour later she was still awake so I gave in and fed her. Then before I go to work in the morning I have to try and feed her again, and she wasn't interested until about 8am, and then only had one side. Ideally she would have the dreamfeed, then sleep through, then take two sides in the morning and I would be happy. But of course babies aren't very predictable are they. Of course it would be wonderful if she would sleep through right from 7.30 till 6.30, but she seems to be too hungry to do that. Is it too much to ask for her to NOT wake up during the night? I work, so getting kinda tired getting up to her. What can I do? Should I just resign myself to the fact that she is going to wake up? I am not too keen on the controlled crying thing, especially if she is clearly hungry.
Other info - I work pretty much fulltime but feed her at lunch and after work. I breastfeed all except for 1 bottle of formula at creche in the morning. We are doing BLW and she eats reasonably well though is a bit up and down.
Any advice/tips etc? (I hope this all makes sense...)
Do I keep dreamfeeding and will she eventually start sleeping through? Any working mums with advice?
Oh - between 3.5 - 5.5 months she DID sleep through from 10ish till about 7, but stopped that around about when I went back to work. I wonder if she IS really hungry cos I am not with her during the day....?
Yep, she will eventually sleep through. However, I can't of course tell you when that day will be. I have found though that when I surrendered to the fact that I could be waking in the night regularly to tend to DD2 for some weeks or months, it made things a whole lot easier. It is still perfectly normal for a baby her age *not* to sleep through, just as it is normal for a baby her age to go a long stretch at night.
As for whether to keep dreamfeeding or not, go with whichever option is most comfortable for you - I am really enjoying breastfeeding this time and as I am usually going to bed around 10:30pm anyway I quite like sitting down for a few minutes to feed plus the lovely hormone release with my let-down is a great primer for my own sleep.
As a disclaimer, I don't do paid work, but I do have a 3 year old and various other responsibilities to attend to so I feel I am just as busy sometimes!
