Alcohol leaves BM at the same rate it leaves your bloodstream, so if you've had 2 drinks, you are safe to feed after 2 hours from when you finished drinking. If you're going to make a night of it, have as many feeds as bubs need overnight expressed, and two for the morning - you may not use them all, but you're better safe then sorry.
So if you have 6 drinks, and finish your last by midnight, you need to feed EBM until at least 6am. If you have 9 drinks and finish your last at midnight, you should feed EBM until at least 9am.

It's actually two hours per standard drink for alcohol to metabolise out of your bloodstream, so if you have one 100ml glass of wine, you will be OK to feed two hours later and no need to 'pump and dump' or feed expressed milk. It just depends on how much you plan to be drinking.

Personally I am not worried about the alcohol going through to the breastmilk like I said thats me personally (not that I drink often if at all)
linky to kelly mom
I had about 4glasses of wine at my cousins birthday over a 6hour period but also had at least double that in water which helps flush your system out. DD was too busy being passed around and having a good time with everyone and being nosey that she didn't even ask for a feed during that time

Mmm, I read its the same as the driving limit! if youre under the limit to drive, you can still breastfeed! otherwise I was told if you have a big one, then express and throw the milk away twice (ie every 3-4hrs!)
Hope that helps! :)

You definetly don't have to 'pump' & dump' unless of course you feel engorged and you need to for your own comfort.

OK, here is a reference to my previous mention of two hours per standard drink:

There is a handy reference chart on the second page for metabolic rates and times vs number of alcoholic drinks.

ok here it is from La Leche
One standard drink takes approximatlyone hour
There i s no need to pump and dump, although you might want to fo releif.
if your baby sleeps in good stretches, you can certainly have a good few drinks, just be aware its an hour roughly to metabalise.
Just taught this in class today so its fresh in my mind, lol, all those drunkards thinking about xmas etc, lol...

Hey Tarts, can I be a pain in the arse and ask if the LLL material you got that from has a clinical / academic reference? One hour is certainly different to two so I want to make sure I am not talking out my backside...

Yes it does. Most if not all LLL information is referenced and comes from studies. Cross my heart. I will go and have a look in a minute.
Also, La Leche League is a reference in itself as it has a board of medical professionals to govern over its information.

ok it peaks in your system 30 to 60 minutes after a drink, so feeding after that is fine. It takes one to two hours to be totally out of the system of a 60kg woman.
Tjhe general rule of thumb is let one hour pass after one drink.
All studies are heavily referenced. Here are some of the studies referenced in one folder I have.
American Academy of Padiatrics committee on drugs
Carlson, H et al
Lawton, M
Little, R et al
Mennella, J and Beauchamp, G x 2
Mennella, J and Gerrish C
Mennella J x 2
Schulte, P
I can, word for word, type out the exact teaching module I have, but at this time of night, I can't be arsed! But, the crux of it is moderation, no co sleeping, one hour to pass from one drink, not a regular thing blah blah. The teaching module i have is an international one, so has been researched ad used internationally for however long the programme I am teaching has been running.
Sorry, not meant to sound rude or preachy, either...

would it be helpful if I referenced all advice I give?
Not to be snarky, but I do get paid to give BF advice, so most of it (my information) comes out of the study that I have had to do this past year to get the job I now have (with our primary health organisation) I am not only liscenced to do so, but also have CERPS towards becoming a lactation consultant...
I'm certainly not saying I'm always right, either, and that others information isn't right, and I am happy to reference, but it is a PITA to drag my books out each time I open my mouth!!
