I second both these books, they are great and will answer your question of "what is self settling?" and neither of these books will tell you that it is CIO
Jack was a 45min napper but he generally tended to wake up happy so that was fine. But as your son wakes and is grumpy then it is obviously not enough sleep. One of these books suggestes that you hover around the bedroom just before the 45min mark and as soon as you hear him stirring you go in and shhh/pat/rock him in his cot to help him move into the next sleep cycle.
