We bought an iPad (because it can be used for hubby's work too) and have found having the ability for DS to watch movies in the car fabulous. He sat their happy as larry for the three our drive home over Easter with his movies and snacks. I think you can pick up portable DVD players for a couple of hundred.

We bought a dual screen one for $200 from dick smiths. Best investment ever, makes the journey so much easier and I'm now happy to do long journeys on my own with the girls in the back.

I was going to buy one but then realised that our GPS played movies. So maybe if you wanted to get more for your money, get a GPS machine.

I found that my son watches it for about 20 mins then is over it. So wasn't exactly what I had hoped for!

I bought one from Dick Smith (about $80 I think) and hang it from a small bag on the back of the passenger seat. Quite pleased with my macgyvering, keeps DS entertained for the last hour or so of the trip home to my parents. Worth every penny!

We've got one from Dick Smith too, just a cheapie.

JessDub - Are you able to share a photo of your macgyvering? DD would prefer it to be hung up as well instead of having it on her lap..

I hope this photo link works! I have a small cloth bag which fits the bottom half of the dvd perfectly, then twist the bag handles in the front seat and secure with a bag clip. The speakers are on the screen half of player so not muffled by bag. The dvd player came with a small remote so once your dvd is loaded, you don't have to fiddle with the bag/player.

The power cord that came with it is quite long but fortunately we have a cigarette lighter in the glove box between the seats.

ETA Sorry it's so big but you get the idea. Happy dvd watching!!
