Topic: Sleep solutions without crying Posted: 03 December 2009 at 1:52pm |
Hi
We are currently rocking DD (she's 6 months old) to sleep, but long term I want to transition her towards self settling.
Does anyone have any advice or books the can recommend?
I would like to do it without letting her cry as she has reflux and I don't want her crying if she is in pain. In the past we have found that patting and Shhhing (which worked for her brother) don't work for her - not sure if there are anyother tools around other than these.
At the moment her favourite way to sleep is in the front pack, which she does for usually one of her day sleeps, the rest are in her bassinette.
Thanks!

I can definitely recommend 'Sleeping Like a Baby' by Pinky McKay - it definitely helped me feel more at ease with how we do things around my 4mo's sleep times.
You could also have a look at www.pinkymckay.com.au

My plunket nurse showed me a good way to settle my daughter to sleep. Wrap her up (or I just hold her hands) any way to stop her moving her arms as that seems to keep her awake longer. Put her in her cot/bassinet on her side and rub her back untill she falls asleep, dont leave her on her side by herself though! Then when she falls asleep slowly turn her onto her back. Worth a try. If that doesn't work see if there is a Plunket Family Centre you can go to and spend the day there and the plunket nurse will show you different techniques. Hope this helps.

I am afraid I wont be much help. At that age I just did whatever they needed to fall asleep. Only at the age of about 1 I would put her on my bed and lie next to her rubbing her back and when she was asleep I would put pillows around her and leave. (BTW I felt comfortable doing it as she was use to sleeping on the bed since 7 weeks old with us and has never ever felt out of a bed yet).
Otherwise a mattrass on the floor will do.
Or you could try just rocking a bit less each time and just staying rubbing their back.

Yeah I found this book brilliant and used it to stop feeding Jack to sleep. Also "The No Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley is great. Both books will tell you about other sleep associations that you can use like reading books, music, cuddlies, mobiles etc

I found the no cry sleep solution one good for us, i got kaelin a snuggly blanket (i got 2 the same) and thats worked perfectly for her. I did read a lot of other books from the library to get different ideas and then used the ones that i thought i could handle and would be good for kaelin too. Good luck

I cant help hugely but I didnt leave my daughter to cry to sleep until she was around 10months old, up until then it was swaddling for as long as she would let me, with rocking or lying her in the bassinet/cot and patting her lightly and repetitively on her tummy to relax her.
