Topic: Underactive thyroid Posted: 30 March 2011 at 8:18pm |
I think I might have this after looking up kellymom about my BF supply issues. It is in the family as my cousin has it and my mum mentioned other have had problems too. Im off to the doctor tomorrow to get blood tests.
Has anyone got this? What are/were your symptoms? What sort of medication do you take and is it BF friendly? I really hope that its an easy fix as im sick of feeling so blah!

Me too, AandCsmum.
It's well worth getting tested if you're worried about it. In my mind, hypothyroidism is one of the cruelest things out there. Thankfully, medication these days is amazing. I'm really not an expert on it because my thyroid swings the other way , but hopefully someone here will be able to help.

Well I have a slightly lower than normal reading but the Dr said to wait a month and re-test. I dont seem to have any trouble with the weight, its the moodiness and tiredness thats getting me.

I have an underactive thyroid- runs in my family. Mine is Hashimoto's (autoimmune) but the medication is the same. Since your body doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone, you just have to take replacement thyroid hormone. I've been told that it doesn't affect the baby since it's the hormone that's already present in your body anyway. Will be doing more research into it when I get pg, I think I will just need to take a slightly higher dose.

I have an underactive thyroid and basically had to have monthly blood tests when pregnant to ensure it was in the normal range. I am also on 100 mg of Thyroxine. I had a lot of trouble bfing from when DS turned about 6 weeks old (prior to then I had LOADS of milk) and had to take domperidone to help- however I also have PCOS so it could be to do with that. The Thyroxine is safe to take when UTD and when bfing. Symptoms I had were weight gain/hard to lose weight and extreme tiredness...good luck!

i have no thyroid glands so i definately under active. i had extremely high results when preg with my son and after they thought i had post natal dep but they changed the formula of the thyroxine. lucky we shifted and alan at the local chemist got on the bang wagona and got new stuff in. 1 week on that and i went from 500mg to 150mg. losing weight it also a issue. had no prob bfeeding and with other preg they kept doin blood tests to check. also never miss a dose - i did a few times cos of being sick - it doesnt effect u that day but in a few days time. good luck

hypothyroid here.
4 months after my son was born, the weight was coming back on despite all attempts to lose it, feeling cold all the time, poor skin condition, swelling in the neck, very low mood and anxiety/depression.
been on 150mcg dose for over a year now. pregnant with second, and just having regular blood tests to check i'm sitting at the right level (demand goes up during pregnancy).
I have a heart condition as well which i've had for years, which can be caused by an OVER active thyroid, so i have been tested for this so many times over the years - normal results - but I had a couple of low ones prior to becoming pregnant. I have probably been sitting slightly low for years and the pregnancy just kicked it over the edge.
