hi my eldest is about to start school in april and he seems to be going through a bit of an up an down stage. when he gets home hes really good playing with his little brother and then something switches and when little brother quiets down big bro starts picking on him when i asked him why he does it he says he doesnt know. i always try and praise him when hes playing nicely and sometimes this can trigger silly behavior also, does anyone else have this with there kids if so how do you deal with it

didn't want to read and run... No real advise as we only have one.

The only thing I can say is that from experience (being the only girl in a family of 4) kids are mean to siblings, my brothers were mean to me. They were terrible. But as we got older we grew out of it and now if something happens we are the first ones to pick the pieces up.

Have no fear they will eventually grow out of it, and one day the younger will be able to take the older on.

Keep doing what your doing though, parenting is tough!

How do you mean he starts "picking on him"  Is it in a way to encourage his little brother to play with him??  I find with my two boys 7 and 3 yrs they annoy each other as a way of trying to play with them.  It's a way of getting attention too.  My oldest boy does it out of boredom too.  So perhaps if your oldest boy is bored he'll pick on his brother.

Perhaps remove your oldest boy from where your youngest is, and get him involved in something else, reading or drawing etc.  Or get him to help you if you're doing something like baking/cooking, or even housework.  That's also a time you can spend with your oldest and he'll appreciate that.  Hope that helps.

My babies:

R (9),G (7), J (5)
