Hi there, my baby daughter is 21 weeks old and has a very itchy tummy. She was born in Brisbane so her skin used to be very dry since birth, now we have moved home to Auckland and with using various creams etc, her skin is not so dry but she scratches her tummy like mad now - and sometimes it is very distressful for her. We're waiting on the results for the RAST blood tests, in the meantime I've given up eggs (mostly) and we're using Weleda Eczema comp. cream with 1% hydrocortisone for flares but is there any particular course of action you would recommend?

Also she is exclusively breastfed on-demand and is tall but quite thin - her height is okay but her weight was 15th percentile at last check and around 3.5 months she stopped putting on as much weight every week. She is hopefully double her birthweight now (was 300g off 3 weeks ago) but the first GP we saw said she should have reached that at 3 months? She seems content enough after feeds but I'm worried potential allergies are stopping her from putting on weight. Can you suggest any foods/supplements I can take to increase the quality of my breastmilk?

Thanks so much

I'd just take a multi vitamin, it won't boost the perceived quality of your milk though, your body will make the best milk regardless, it'll be what you are eating that is flaring her up. If you think of women who are in countries that only have a very limited diet they grow their babies quite well (apart from famine countries obviously)

Has she only been scratching since using the creams? Do you think it might be something in the cream?

My DD had ezcema like that when she was younger. Dairy was a big contributer to her flare ups. Once I cut that out she was much better. You could try pintarsol or similar in her bath. Baking soda or a muslin bag of oats can help with itching too.

My girl had mild excema and it went away once I cut dairy out of my diet, it also helped with her wind problems. If you are going to try and cut it out then you need to do it for about two weeks before its fully out of your system. Good luck

I found Pinetarsol in the bath helped with the scratching(you can get it on prescription) otherwise baking soda helped. also don't use anything other than that in the bath.
Then I just did the usual, Hydrocort cream if needed and fatty cream twice a day. TBH I didn't really find the Weleda cream helped all that much and went the conventional medicines route, because he was way more comfortable and I didn't need to use the steriod cream that often as long as I used the fatty cream.
Also make sure you are only using natural fibres and she isn't over heating, we pretty much only dressed in cotton.
Also its normal for them to double their birth weight by 6 months not 3, so she seems right on track.
My boys eczema wasn't related to allergies, and he has mostly grown out of it.
