Hi,

Any body taken their babies to ski fields with them? We're planning to go to whakapapa this weekend with my 8 month old baby. Not sure if that's too young. Will it be too much of a hassle for both parents and the baby? I know it there are quite a few toddlers there but not sure of babies. Any tips, dos and donts?

It depends, are you going to go up just to hang out or are you going up to ski??

We took our kids up to the snow really young but we haven't actually been able to go up skiing when we have them. If you do want to ski obviously the baby/toddler needs to be happy with who ever they are left with, there are plenty of easy access cafe's but be aware the weather does change quickly.

I think I first took C up & he was in the Moby so well attached but you also have to be careful you don't slip on ice & fall on them.

I am taking DS in a few weeks. Last season i saw parents skiing with babies in a back carry in ergos. Not something i'd do personally but the skiiers were both mountain patrollers so confident as all hell. Obviously i won't be skiing this year but sledding. Good fun!

My father used to ski with me in a backpack, wrapped in a sleeping back when I was about that age. I guess it's doable, though I shudder to think about what might happen with all the reckless, inexperienced skiers and boarders around these days
Like the others said - it really depends on whether you are planning on skiing WITH the baby, leaving them somewhere, or just taking them to the snow for a play...

We went at the start of July with DS who was 13 months at the time. We were with a big group, so the first day I skied and the second day DH did. DS hated the snow - it was cold and he couldn't understand why it would be fun! We hung out in the cafe (at Turoa there is an upstairs cafe which was quiet so he could run around) and he slept in the pram. I took him up the chair lift and he was petrified to start with, but by the time we came back down he was enjoying himself. We were pretty much the only ones there with a baby younger than 2.
