Hi I want to make decorations for DS and DD cake that go on a wires

Like this (We are using this cake as a template)

http://birthdaycakesite.net/birthday-cakes/children-birthday-cakes-5/

You can buy on trademe but sooo expensive I was thinking the wire to use would be from a florist.

Posted in here so I get a reply as keen to go out and get wire after their nap and try making the decorations tonight for party on Sat.

Thanks in advance.

Timaru, not a big town you can't buy anything like that here in a shop (but don't want to pay heaps anyway!).

We make those all the time at work (the Cheesecake Shop) any wire as long as it's qutie firm, florists I think would bend a bit too much?
We just roll out fondant, cut the shape and stick the wire in and then leave to dry somewhere flat (a foam sheet is best though). I put mine in the hot water cupboard.

You can also roll them in pva and dip them in glitter too :)

Main thing is not to roll the fondant too thin as it can break and to have them lying flat (check both sides that the wire has gone straight in, not in then out again)

Hope that helps!

florists will have different gauge wires i would suggest asking for wire that they use for gerebera cant think what gauge it is of the top of my head. also if your going to use florist wire try not to stick them direct into the cake if you can get some cocktail straws cut them to the lenget you want poke them into the cake once you have your layer of fondant on then fill with buttercrem or something simialar and poke wires in there.

like others have said dont roll too flat, also to help you can hook the end that you are going to insert into star and use a wee bit of sugar glue on end of wire.

I can't add anything to what the others have said, but reckon you've been given good advice You'll have to post a pic of the finished product!

Thanks was in luck when I went to the florist wholesalers there was a girl there that is a trained pastry chef but had lost her job cos of the earthquake so she was very helpful.

Mmm may not be showing anyone who sees the cake in real life that pic cos the ones we make may not look very similar.

Thanks for the tips on making them keolyn
