Topic: Do you take folic acid? Posted: 02 March 2010 at 2:27pm |
Just curious if you take folic acid when you are not actively TTC but aren't finished having babies?
We aren't TTC at the moment but unplanned pregnancies happen and it only occurred to me yesterday that perhaps I should be taking folic acid just in case...

I did after Jared even though we had no plans at that stage to try again. I did just in case since Jared had spina bifida

I am taking it but only cause I'm not on any contraception. We aren't actively TTC, in fact DP doesn't want another one but appears to be doing nothing to prevent it

Not taking it, hardly took it with C cause it made me throw up!
My DD was an unplanned preg so I didn't take it until I was around 5-6 weeks pregnant. I took it right up to 14 weeks with her.

Personally I think if you are not using contraception than you should be taking it JIC....
I was taking blackmores preg gold as I was trying to loose weight and bf (read somewhere if you are taking less than 2000 calories per day when bf you should be taking a supplement) and it had folic acid in it.

Yes, I take it in the form of a multi vitamnin but also took an additional supplement when I was preggers with my LO. I'm not actively TTC, but if it happens, I want to make sure the chances of spina bifida are low.

Thats a good idea actually, Isabella was an unplanned pregnancy, I started taking it as soon as I found out I was pregnant though.
I might start taking some again, just in case :)

I actually didn't know you were supposed to until i was 13 weeks and saw a midwife...I am so relieved my son was healthy, I was pretty clueless about folic acid.
I was eating a ton of silverbeet though.

Just a side note on folic acid - I read recently that some research was done that found that when Mums continued to take folic acid after the first trimester the children had a 30% higher chance of getting asthma. It's just one piece of research so far and I'm sure they will do more to see if they find the same outcome, but a lot of those pregnancy vitamins like Elevit have folic acid in them and say to take them throughout the pregnancy, so it might be worth keeping in mind when choosing prenatal vitamins.
