Also, for those that qualify (ie Maori), Ngai Tahu has a savings scheme also. We've just signed the kids up and they get up to $250 (ballpark figure there) a year in topups.
We have just got accounts open in our names, under each child's name. At the moment we put money in when we can afford it, but in the next year or so we will start putting money in weekly, with the aim to have about 20k in there by the time they are ready for uni (figure to be changed depending on cost of a standard 3-year degree or average first home deposit down the track)
