Topic: Post-Quake Differences Posted: 11 March 2011 at 9:02am |
So what are the things in your life that you do differently now?
Every time I go to a shop I look around for the best place to hide in the event of a quake
I avoid going to places like The Warehouse which have high shelves (as I am worried they might fall and squash me)
I have tables in my kids rooms to hide under in the event of a quake at night
And I keep a supply of nappies, wipes and clothes in the car in case we have to leave in a hurry

I keep my mobile and a torch by the bed when I go to sleep, make sure my car is always filled with petrol and I'm constantly charging my phone and buying bottles of water.
When I walk into a public place I look up at the ceiling to see what could fall. I avoid malls and shops in general unless I really need to go and then I'm in and out really fast. There's no way on earth I would go to the movies.
DH and I tell each other where we will be during the day and if it changes we'll call each other.
The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is look at the quake site to see how big the quakes were that I felt during the night.

I'm trying to carry on as before, but I have to admit I'm much more 'prepared' should we have another quake - we now have a good supply of bottled water in the garage; there is at least one change of clothes for the boys in our car (along with wipes, nappies, & a few toys); and I make sure my cell ph battery is always charged & the car has at least half a tank of gas. I'm also much more conscious of keeping up with the groceries to make sure we're not running low on food.

Have kept a torch my bed since September too. DH always takes his mobile phone with him now. We have decided to never let the car go under 1/2 full on petrol. I have milk and bread in the freezer and have a 'grab bag' that will fit under the buggy if we had to leave now. I think about it all the time at the moment
We had a pretty good earthquake kit after Septembers quake.

I'm terrible! I know I should get an emergency kit together, but all I have is the water and 3 cans of food. I am so unprepared! We just can't afford anything extra in our groceries, which sux. I'm like, how do we get a kit together when we have no spare money?
I am way more worried about the possibility of a quake here. Being they say it's not a matter of if Wellington will have a big one, it's a matter of when. Plus at PIN groups and coffee groups, it seems to be the main thing everyone is discussing since the latest CHCH quake.

I constantly worry about where my kids are, and I have my younger ones sleeping in our room since the first one.
Everywhere I go I am assessing the risks around me - cliffs, buildings etc and the first thing I think about when I go somewhere is where would I hide in event of earthquake.
I have the house arranged for easy access to the table and have the chairs on one side away from the table so we can easily find our way under it in the dark or light.
We have torches and cell phones by our beds. I also sleep with the light on in the room next to us.
Trains, trucks or anything that makes a loud noise scare the crap out of me...
I am so incredibly thankful that all my family and friends survived! I can't believe how lucky we have been... but I don't know if we will ever feel safe again

I know I'm not near the quakes that have been happening but since Sept I've keep bottles of water specifically for Cooper's formula, I'm now also stockpiling his formula as if things do happen here I can't go to supermarket and get it.

I can't say i do much differently.. except wait after the rumble of every truck to see if it's a quake..i guess we do have much more bottled water around (which we are still drinking) I still go all the places I need to but am rather jumpy at having my kids in different places again like they were when the quake hit..
I do feel more thankful and less stressed about little things..knowing someone who died just makes you realise how precious life is...
i do have most of an emergency kit which i didnt before with Liam's special formula etc in it..just need to finish that off.. i do agree with freckle..I don't feel safe though.. not sure when/if I will.. it's not the earthquakes..they don't bother me so much it's the lack of security:(

I've been pretty slack and STILL haven't put an emergency kit together, but my parents and my big sis have prepared enough for a small town so if we come unstuck, we can just raid their stash
But I am very nervous about going anywhere. Don't think I'll go to the mall for a long long time (was at Ricc Mall when the boxing day one hit and that was scary enough - had only just plucked up the courage to go back to the mall, now not so sure!). I have been to the supermarket a few times since Feb 22nd but never take DD with me as I'm paranoid something will fly off a shelf and hit her.
We have rearranged our rooms so furniture isn't in the way if we need to get out quick.
Also make sure car is at least half full as on day of quake, car was almost on empty... was going to get petrol on way to work but didn't have time. Was very lucky that I actually had enough petrol to get home before I could find a petrol station that was open.
We have always made sure we have our phones on us at all times so nothing has changed there, but we always tell each other where we are going...... just incase.
What I'd really like to do is just the heck out of CHCH!! Will never feel safe here again

* I don't ride in a bus (after seeing the ones that got squished)
* I automatically look at cracks or damage in the road and wonder if it's from the EQ...even when we were in tauranga
* starting to avoid going out of the house driving cuz I get so sad seeing all the damage (we in Sydenham which is right next to the CBD)
* have all the pictures and anything that can fall packed away
* got rid of the furniture in our house that fell cuz I keep imagining what would have happened to my lil one if she had been in the lounge
* have so much more of a respect for our water! it's like liquid gold

The big thing for me is I no longer go to the mall - I use to be a mall rat - so I shop on Trademe now instead much safer ha-ha.
We have water stored away now and always take torches with us to bed.
It's always going to be in the back of our minds really isn't it, the thing for me is we seemed to just be heading back to normal after September - when February hit.

I too scout out all buildings for a safe spot, i was in mitre 10 mega the other day and it freaked me out, all the baths and things on the walls waiting to fall!
I stopped taking DS in his stroller in town, like to have him in my arms in case.
I didnt go mad with an emergency kit as we are in Timaru so we're nowhere near as bad as chch.
Strapped the TV to the wall as his kick space (was) within its falling range.
Always have a mental image of where DS is and the quickest way to get to him should things start shaking.

I'm still not going to malls, think it will be a while before I go back.... especially Riccarton Mall, have heard some rather frightening things about that place...... like they went thru 3 structural engineers before they got the place signed off, the first 2 said it wasn't safe to have people in it. And a friend of a friend actually worked on the place when they built the new carpark and apparently the work done on it is pretty dodgy. It might just be hearsay but it's enough to put me off.
I will go into single level shops tho, like at Tower Junction. You don't have to run as far to get to the exit!!
