Topic: Is solids the only answer? Posted: 17 March 2010 at 8:35am |
Nathan is really changing. He's more grizzly during the day (I don't know if he gets bored or what but he is only fine for a few mins at an activity on his own when he used to be entertained for ages by himself - even with new toys. He's fine if we are giving him our undivided attention. And he is screaming when I put him down to bed quite often. This would worry me about his ears or something but he's got the all-clear from the GP. He's also more unsettled at night - often waking every few hours between 7pm-midnight to grizzle and not always getting back to sleep by himself.
I guess it could be teething but it doesn't seem like it. I am wondering if he is hungry and wants solids as he shows a lot of signs for being ready for solids, yet lots of information I've read suggest it's best to wait until 6mo and that's what I would prefer yo do.. I don't know what to do with him but he's not the happy baby he used to be. Any ideas?

no solids isnt the only answer... and it may not fix the problem anyway...
it could be teeth. they move around a lot under the gums before breaking through. have you got some teething powder or gel or something you could try to see if that settles him down a bit?

Jake does this around the time he starts doing something new... like learning to sit, getting on to his knees, crawling etc..... It might be he is busy learning a new skill he is about to amaze you with
Someone put into perspective for me ... how would you feel if one morning you woke up and your world had changed without warning... this is what happens to our little people as the grow and learn and I imagine that would be quite unsettling...

Solids aren't the only answer. At 4mths it's a bit early for that. To share someone elses story the MIL said, oh look he's interested in food, it must be time to start solids. Reply was, he's interested in my key ring too, should I teach him to drive?
Anyhow, they go through so many changes. I still say DS changes every week. He has days of this, a week of that, it's all a phase - some more fun than others. When DS has days that he wants all my attention, I just give it to him - I call them his 'it's all about me' days

You're not alone DD is 4 1/2 months and has gone from sleeping 7-9 hours then a feed then sleeping until 7-8am. She is now waking every 1-3 hours throughout the night (7-7). I think it was initally teeth as she's way more relaxed since we got an amber necklace but she's now in the habit which we are trying to break. Up until a couple of weeks ago she was really unsettled during the day as well.
I say give him the attention I've noticed that DD is way more aware of what is going on around her now which would explain him wanting you to be close, I'd hold off on the solids too 4 months is young IMO closer to 6 months the better.

From memory DD did the same thing just over 4 months, but I was stubborn and there was no way she was getting solids! I was up several times per night feeding, it was so hard! At just under 5 months her first teeth appeared (within a week of each other), we started solids just over 5 months when she pinched food off my plate (we did BLW). Best to just take it as it comes, and try and hold off solids for a little while yet.
I love the key-ring response!

It does sound like he might just be going thru a phase - my suggestion would be to go with it (and keep him close - do you have a sling or something so you can wear him but still get things done around the house if you need to?) and hopefully you'll find that he comes out of it before you know it :) I'd hold off solids as long as you can - though in saying that, our intention was to avoid them until 6mths but for various reasons we ended up starting just after 5mths and it worked well for Bethany.
If you want to try anything else along the teething lines, we found teethmed (one of the naturopharm sprays you can get from the pharmacy) was really good for Bethany ages before any teeth ever appeared. That and colimed for when she had unsettled patches, cuz although she wasn't colicky, it really helped her settle down and seemed to calm her reflux too.
All the best - hang in there, the grizzles won't last forever I promise! ;)
Lol love the keyring story too!

From memory things were pretty similar with my daughter about 4 months. Teeth, development changes and I think they change their sleep cycles around that time at night too? The sleep store website has heaps of info on that I think. If you do think DS is more hungry though, maybe give him extra milk feeds. Milk will be the easiest thing for him to digest at this age and has more calories than early baby food too :)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Babies are puzzles aren't they? It's just getting to know them too. Turns out he had a throat infection. He got worse (grizzling and screaming when going to bed) - really out of character for him so rang Plunketline and ended up taking BACK to the Dr.... and this time showed he had a red throat. Today he is worse still, so bought some Ibuprofen as well and if not better, will take back to the Dr on Monday - wouldn't be surprised if maybe it's reached his ear. Poor little guy.
