My wee man is coming up three months, and has sort of settled himself into a routine of waking around 7am ish, feeding at 11am ish, 2pm ish and then 5pm ish, going to bed no later than 7pm. He is currently waking anywhere between 2 and 4am for a feed and is HUNGRY, not just doing it out of habit (I think!). I don't do a dream feed (I am too scared to forgo my sleep as I go to bed around 8pm!) but wonder whether this would help him sleep through? He slept through of his own accord for THREE blissful nights last week AND slept during the day (which isn't like him at all!) but now there is no sign of this happening again.

Should I just go with the flow for now? Am I expecting too much for him to go from 7pm - 6am at this age? Will he naturally go through when he is ready?? Or should I try to "force" him? Lots of my friends have routined their babies but this appears to require a lot of letting them cry (especially in the night) and I'm not sure I can do that.

Thoughts??? Experiences??

At 3 months its normal to wake up hungry in the night. He will go the whole night when hes ready.

Personally I think the pattern you have got going on is pretty good and I wouldn't change it. Thats some great sleep during the night even with the wake up and if it were me i'd be reluctant to change it too in fear of distrupting his sleep patterns.

Personally I would just go with the flow... I could never be bothered doing a dream feed and there is a single bed in DS room, so I would just snuggle into the bed with him and sometimes would fall asleep there....

Some babies will do a 10-12 hours stretch at that age but for me I am quite happy to feed him for as long as he wants it. But I wouldnt be forcing the issue so young...

They are babies for such a short time, why rush it?

Of course that is just my opinion...

Thanks! I forgot to add, I do have a bit of a routine in my head as I will only feed 3 to 3 1/2 hourly. Problem is he only sleeps for about an hour at a time during the day so sometimes this gets difficult! I am very concious of the snacking and snoozing thing, although really, he is still only snoozing an hour!

I have a routine for feeds but not for sleeps. my DD is a little bit older and we are feeding 3.5-4 hourly during the day she still wakes twice a night for a feed at around 10/11pm and then again between 2-4am. Her feeds are around 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm plus if she wakes at night.
Her sleeps sometimes fit into her feeds but not always so she sometimes has a feed as soon as she's up, other times halfway through play or just before sleep time. She was cat napping up until about 2/3 weeks ago and now she mainly does 1.5hour sleeps.

Liam is demand fed (though we are heading towards routine) and only sleeps for 45 mins and really about 2-3 hours in the whole day.. so frustrating but he's happy most of the time so Plunket say it's ok:( anyway he sleeps 6-2 then fed and up for day at 6-7am so similar to you and really his feeding is a feed then break then small feed before bed and it's around three hours but i will feed him before if he needs it cause I think he's a bit young to be fully routined yet but that's just me..I let him cry 2-5 mins and that is enough to know if he is going to sleep or not but i refuse to let him CIO.. so if i was you I would just carry on with what you are doing:)
Mum to two amazing boys!

DS who is 3 months sometimes sleeps through the night, other times (like the last 3 nights) he wakes between 4 and 5am for a feed. I feed him between 2-4 hourly during the day.

He had been sleeping through the night for about the last 3 weeks, so Im not sure what has happened to make him wake during the night but Im just going with it at the moment.

During the day he sleeps anywhere from 1 - 3 hours at a time, depending on the time of day. I have had no success with dream feeds either.

I agree with the others, just go with the flow for now, one wake up is pretty good really. We just had 2 full nights sleep and some good naps too and then last night up 3 times. But now that we know he can go through the night and nap longer than 45 minutes I feel confident it's only a matter of time and it will sort itself out as I'm not a fan of CIO either.

I'm not into the dream feed either, works for some but for me it made no difference and meant I got less sleep at the beginning of the night.

Man, how do you get babies to go 3-4 hours between feeds? We might get an interval that long once a day! Not that it really bothers me, in fact it doesn't bother me at all, we just do demand feeding... but no way its every 3 hourly... she does sleep from between 8 and 9pm till between 4am and 6am, then back down till 8ish, so goes a long time at night. She just likes to feed a lot during the day. Probably snack feeds, but I'm not convinced that's a problem?

I was demand feeding and DD got into the habit of snack feeding which then led to her waking 2 hourly for a feed 24 hours a day! Which is why we now do 3.5-4hourly (sometimes a little less if shes really asking for it). Sometimes I have to distract her to get her to 3.5 hours but she's not upset by having to wait and she sleeps much better. The first day when we stretched out her feeds was hard as she didn't understand that she had to wait but it only took one day for her to start going longer between feeds.

It only became a problem for us because she started wanting the feeds at night, it is obviously working perfectly ok for you

Ahhh yes, I can see how that would be a problem, glad you got it sorted :)

it sounds like you've already got a nice routine happening and i agree with the others that it is pretty normal at this age for babies to wake during the night for a feed. You can change it for sure, but it'll take a few nights of resettling and then he may make it up during the day. Or not! What works for some babies really doesn't for everyone.

The question i guess is are you coping ok with the sleep you are getting? Try not to think too much about the lucky buggers whose baby sleeps 11 hrs at this age. Babies have different needs.

You could try getting an extra feed in there at 7pm or 10pm or both and see if it helps. He's gotta get those calories so adding an extra feed in could get him to sleep through on his own. Then if no luck reevaluate when you aren't coping.

My first boy i got to that not coping stage at about 16 weeks i think and he was waking up not really that hungry at 7am. So i stopped the night feeds cold turkey. DH resettled him for a few nights and that was it, no more night feeds ever. He just drank more by day.
Some babies do it on their own others need a bit of a nudge, it doesn't have to mean using cio to do so though.
