    Posted: 06 May 2010 at 4:27pm
Any one got any great techniques or tips on how to get my three month old to go back to sleep? He has two one hour naps morning and afternoon, wakes once in the night (twice if I am unlucky!). However I want him (and he needs!) to have a two or two and a half hour nap at lunch time. However he wakes after the first sleep cycle and THINKS he has had enough sleep, when I know he hasn't :-(

I have tried: letting him cry, going in and comforting him then letting him cry, picking him up and/or changing his nappy and putting him back, stroking his head, a dummy, patting his bum. None of which works. The only thing that will work is getting him into the pram and walking. Usually after 10 or 15 minutes (sometimes longer) he will fall back asleep for another hour or hour and a half. However I don't want to have to do this every time! He USED to be really good at self settling, but isn't anymore for some reason.

Today I got him up and put him in his bouncer. He stayed awake for 3/4 of an hour before being lulled into sleep.

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. This is the only nap I want to get sorted! :-)

I'm not sure if I can be much help, as it seems like you like to have a strict routine and we just did what DD was "telling" me.... but... What signs he is giving you that he needs to go back to sleep after his hour? Maybe he is trying to extend out his up times? If he seems happy and alert after the hour, you may well save yourself a lot of stress and walking time with getting him up, then looking for his tired signs after about an hour(ish?) then putting him back down.

Is he happy to play after the hour, is he hungry or is he tired? Sometimes Lily wakes after only an hour and usually she's quite happy to play until it's time for a feed... HTH?

Wow Elfs Mum 13 hours at night well done! My son is still waking around 3am for a feed.

After the hour he is WIDE awake, but still tired and is MUCH happier if he has at least two hours. He can't last till his next feed (which is about 2 or 230pm) and is grizzly not happy.

kathamill I have tried getting him up and putting him back down when I see those tired signs again but he just screams and won't settle :-(

Have you tried sneaking in just before his sleep cycle is finished and tucking him back in again, or rewrapping if he is being wrapped...this used to work for me but I never seem to catch the sleep cycle ending now

I used to have a bit of luck with going in as she was waking and shushing and patting her back to sleep. If he's sleeping an hour he's putting himself back to sleep at the 45 minute mark.

Have you tried a white noise cd or something similar? Maybe that could help him to get through to the next sleep cycle. We have a white noise track playing constantly on an ipod in DD's room. I'm not sure if it helps all that much or not but don't wanna ridsk taking it away lol!

Most 3 month olds still need at least one feed in the 12 hrs overnight- you saying that he "still" needs a feed at 3am makes me think maybe your expectations of a 3 month old are a bit high! We all like sleep, but 12 hrs is a long long time for a little baby to go without anything. Also like someone else said, most young babies dont have a strict timetable, cos they are so changeable, and expecting him to feed and sleep at the same times and for the same ammount each day, well its probably not gonna happen!

Ive been worried that my post was a bit harsh, and contemplated removing it, so Im glad that I didnt offend you.
I like rouitne /stucture and to be organised, and had a job like that, but babies just arent like that, well some are I guess, but even the ones that sleep 12 hrs from early on change! Often they are the ones that dont sleep much in the day either.
I know what u mean about 45 mins not being enough tho- check out the sleep info on www.thesleepstore.co.nz. Has great ideas on how to help baby to stop waking after eac sleep cycle. I have found it really useful! Even tho Aiden is my 2nd, man babies are sooo different, he is nothing like my first at all, so I need al the info I can get!

My wee girl slept 14 hours a night from 3 weeks to 3 months then just started waking anywhere from once to 4 times a night! So they can change it up on you at any time!
