So have been to the dentist recently and bascially my teeth are rubbish. Slowly chipping away at the work that needs doing.

One of the things I need to have done is get all four of my wisdom teeth removed surgically. They dont give me any pain but due to the way they grow (both above and below the gum), are doing a lot of damage to the rest of my teeth which is part of the reason the rest of the work has been so costly.
Didnt think this would be an issue as I have medical insurance...turns out I was wrong.

I read through my policy just to check before I started and since Ive only had it for 6 months, it wont cover the removal until late August (need to be covered for 12 months).

By August I am hoping to be pregnant (were hoping to start ttc next month) and although I *think* I can still get it done while UTD, I would prefer not to. So then by the time bub is on more of a routine feeding, we are looking at at least 12 months away.

I am seeing the specialist next week (thankfully the insurance covers that visit at around $350!) and will ask his opinion on if they urgently need removing (which the dentist leaned towards) but what would you do:

- pay to get it done now (around $1200 a tooth or more depending on difficulty)
- wait until September and get them done then, also delaying TTC
- TTC now, bringing the date forward a bit and get teeth removed next year sometime

Really dont know what to do here. Id prefer not to put of ttcing but at the same time, we cant really afford to do it all (although im sure we could find the money if absolutly needed) and I dont want to end up paying more to fix my other teeth if more damage is done in the meantime.......

Thanks

My sympathies for your teeth troubles... expensive and painful blimmin things.

I would ask your specialist exactly what you've asked here. It may be that you could wait to have a baby then have insurance cover the removal. How fast do wisdom teeth grow?

And depending on what the specialist says, it might also be ok to get them removed while pregnant under local anaesthetic. I'm pretty sure my dentist said it was to give me a filling using local while I was pregnant.

I think given the extent of the damage id be under a GA but I will ask if it can be done with a local only. Could solve a few issues

I had two taken out on the same day with just local .. so def doable.

If they werent causing me any pain, I would personally wait till I was covered (unless I won lotto, then what the hell)

i had a toothache and found out i needed about three fillings! But only one urgently to prevent a root canal, the dentist was happy to do just that one as i am pregnant but told me he wouldn't do the other two as they weren't urgent and could be done after baby is born.. so they can definitely do local but i am not sure about general.. this was just before i left NZ a couple of weeks ago.

Thats only if you and the dentist are ok with doing them through local though

I've been told I have to have a general and get 2 of my wisdom teeth removed surgically(had two removed when I was about 20 weeks pregnant with local).

My dentist told me I would have to wait until I had stopped BFing before they would do it though as it passes through to baby. Lucky for me they aren't causing any damage, just a lot of pain from time to time.

Perhaps PM TheKelly, as I think she used to work in the industry.

Hmm, that makes me think the option of waiting until after bub #2 wouldnt really work, as I would be bfing until at least 12 months (all going well) then too, then perhaps after that a number 3 would be cooking - vicious cycle

Have rethought the local too. The are needing to saw each of the four in half or more, and then extract the pieces - sounds lovely. Much prefer to be knocked out for that I think.

Ideally, Id love to just get them all done now and then start ttc afterwards but the cost is making me think we need to delay ttc#2 6-7 months ...wheres that money tree when its needed?

I would talk to the specialist,if they are not causing you pain you should be able to put it off for a while, however, the problem is that as they grow and impact deeper, they can be sorer.

As for the local vs general, in the end you have to do what you feel most comfortable with, but I can tell you that when I was working at the dentist we had plenty of cases like yours and plenty of patients that had to have the teeth cut in half and the pieces extracted, they didn't even notice...(but I did, was always my favourite part, watching the dentist dig around for teeth fragments )

oh and also bear in mind that there are plenty of local anesthetics which are fine to use in pregnancy, if you go after you have started TTC and think you may be pregnant, just let your dentist know, although ideally, for xrays etc it would probably pay not to be UTD

I would do it as soon as you can. Mine got so impacted i had to have them all surgically removed. I was on a lot of pain killers after but the pain was actually that bad. I also didnt know how much of a problem they were causing until they were removed!

Is paying for that an option at the moment? Otherwise talk to WINZ, they have a dental grant available. I'm not sure if it depends on income or bank balance or both.
