Topic: Parent Rooms Posted: 20 September 2011 at 3:30pm |
Hi - we are traveling around New Zealand and would like recommendations for parent rooms and locations. We have a 3year old and breastfeeding a 3 month baby. We have been traveling in Australia and what an eye opener. Thanks :-)

I like the parents' rooms in the North City Mall in Porirua - they have cubicles with comfy chairs for breast feeding, microwave, bottle warmer, TV playing kids' TV and a separate toilet room with an adult sized and toddler sized toilet
Trying to think of somewhere in Wellington but am at a loss! Though the parents' room in the city council building next to the library is quite good.

we always use McDonalds. Play area for the toddler, food for us, and well I just BF in a corner or in the carpark.

Most malls in Auckland have parent rooms, and most public spaces have change tables in the disabled toilets. I have never had a problem breastfeeding in public/cafes with my DS, people are generally pretty cool with it when babies are small.
Have a great trip

Bayfair mall in Tauranga has a parents room which has a toy area for toddlers and some couches & chairs for breastfeeding, plus a microwave I think.

Westfield malls all seem to have good parents rooms. Wellington city is shocking, the only place I can think of is Kirkaldie & Staines

All of the Westfield shopping malls have parents rooms, they vary a bit, they all have arm chairs and private cubicles for bf and changing areas.

I don't know if you specifically mean for breast-feeding, but here's a website focussed on the South Island that identifies places like Plunket Rooms, breastfeeding friendly cafes etc: http://remarkablemilk.blogspot.com/p/what-were-looking-for.html

WELLINGTON
Kirkcaldie & Stains in the CBD has a basic parents room & toilet facilities in the kids toys/clothes area. There is also a cafe on site.
Te Papa Museum also in the CBD has parents rooms and a cafe and the usual museum stuff for kids and entry is free.
Capital Gateway (small shopping complex close to Wellington Railway station) has toilets with baby change facilities and a cafe as well several kids shops and free parking.
Queensgate Mall in Lower Hutt has 2 good parents rooms with the same things as mentioned above at the Porirua Mall.

I often use libraries if nowhere else around. They often have nappy change facility and the kids can have some stories while there.
Ditto McDonalds too.
Lots of the touristy places have nice facilities.

Wellington City Library has one, also the ones that Danda08 mentioned.
If you can give some ideas on cities where you plan on visiting then we can you some better ideas.

Some of the BabyCity shops do - BabyCity in Manakau (Auckland) has a nice one.
Sylvia Park in Auckland also has some nice baby rooms.

I'm not sure where you are from but breastfeeding in public is perfectly acceptable in NZ. On the odd occasion that someone is made to feel uncomfortable for BFing in a cafe or similar there is such a public uproar about it the message soon gets through that babies are entitled to be fed.
McDonalds are great in that they have clean bathrooms, change facilites, are cheap, have good playgrounds for your 3 yo.
Sylvia Park shopping centre in Auckland has probably the best parent rooms I've seen. Many cafe's will have a comfy chair for feeding and often a box of toys for your preschooler.
