So question about sleeping!

Lexie is 4 months now, About 4 weeks ago she stopped sleeping her 12 hours through the night and now wakes generally twice a night and is demolishing her bottles. Her day sleeping had finally got to a good point about 3 weeks ago where she was having a 2-3 hour sleep, a 1.5 hour sleep and a couple of 45 minute sleeps in a day.

Now I'm not too worried about the waking in the night thing she is obviously hungry so thats fine, the part that is frustrating me is that for the last couple of days she has all of a sudden stopped doing her good sleeps, I haven't changed the way I am putting her down or when but now she sleeps for like 15 minutes and wakes up, happy not crying, but I try to resettle her she might go back to sleep after about 10 mins for another 15 minutes, but then I can't get her to go back down after that! Any ideas to what the issue could be? Should she still be having a lot of sleeps during the day or is it about now she should be awake for a longer amount of time? She was having the majority of those day sleeps in the morning before all this happened.

hope this makes sense lol am a bit tired so brain is a bit off lol

From memory, Cooper was having 2-3 sleeps a day. One at 9.30 for two hours, up for bottle, play etc then he would go down anywhere from 2 pm. BUT that afternoon sleep was very hit and miss because I would have to leave at 2.30 to pick my daughter up from school.. so sometimes he'd go down when we got home...and yes he was having longer awake times.

What time is she getting up in the morning and then what time are you putting her down for her first nap?

I would be trying to get her to have 2 good sleeps during the day and maybe a "nana nap" in the afternoon just so she can stretch until bed time.

You may also find she needs more to eat now.. how many feeds? How many mls are the bottles?

Thanks for your quick response!

She is getting up between 7 and 7:30 every morning and I normally try to put her down for her first nap within the first hour and that was working up until a couple of days ago.

She has 6-8 bottles of 150mls in 24 hours, I have tried upping her bottles to 200 mls but she just ends up leaving the extra 50, or I try to give her a top up and she doesn't even touch it.

See if you can stretch her out longer in the morning.. to around 9ish...

150mls was what I was giving Cooper at her age too... she is definitely getting enough to eat then.

Is she cold?

I think you may just need to consistent and just keep putting her down at the times you normally do and maybe just leave going to her for a bit longer as well. Sounds like she's having trouble stretching past that 45min mark - not sure why???

hey Bex - Lexie may be a grazzer like Jayden. I make up the 200ml bottles and sometimes he will drink 120mls and sometimes the whole bottle. I generally leave what he hasn't drunk and give him the rest when he next needs it - sometimes he needs the rest not long after having the first bit.

I'd try stretching her out a bit too. Also if she's waking happy have you tried leaving her? I don't get Esme up if she's happy unless she's had a decent sleep. I've listened to her chat away for 20 minutes before she goes back to sleep. Sometimes I put her down and think she's asleep and 15 minutes later shes chatting away. 2-3 sleeps with a total of 4-5 hours is about what they should be doing between 4-6 months but every baby is different. Esme was doing 4-5 45 minute sleeps at 4 months and is now doing 2-3 sleeps of anywhere from 1-3 hours.

Good luck as I know that the sleep thing is tricky we have just got through 3 months of little sleep (I'm talking 45 minute naps during the day and only 2-3 hour stretches at night!)

Welcome to the catnappers club!!

Sounds like she wants to have longer awake times. DD screamed when I put her down after an hour, then started putting her down after 1.5 hours and she went down fine. She's now doing 2 hours up.

She also started catnapping at 3months old. She takes half hour sleeps during the day and sleeps all night. Biggest lesson I've learnt is to go with the flow. If she's happy after her short sleep then just get her up. If she's still tired try re-settling her, or get her up for 10mins and try again.
Don't get stressed if she won't go back to sleep as it can become very frustrating and that just results in an unhappy mum.
My motto: feed them when they're hungry, put them to bed when they're tired and make the most of the time inbetween!    Keep night time quiet and dark and no eye contact.

DD has been catnapping for 2 months now and I've just come to accept that this is how she is. She used to have 3 two hour sleeps a day. Oh how my life changed when she started catnapping!
I still hope one day she'll spoil me and do a big 2-3 hour sleep. The only problem with the catnapping is she gets very overtired by the end of the day.

Hope things get back on track soon for you. It can be very frustrating this sleep thing.

4 months they can have a growth spurt, Jake was always unsettled day and night during his growth spurts...

Also he woke up a fair bit around then too and was definately having more awake time but it can be a bit hit and miss during the transition so some days it works and some days it doesnt.

Just when you figure it out the go and change the rules LOL
