Just make sure you leave things pretty open. Like you'll notice with mine, it's all written out with my preference first, but also states that I'm willing to accept otherwise if it is in the best interests of me and bub.
I figure that way I can't be disappointed. We can try our best to do what I want, but I will know that if I don't get what I want, it's because it was the best option we had at the time for the sake of baby and me and not because somebody else barged in with their own opinions or practices.

Hehe....this reminds me, I asked my midwife if we should do a birth plan, to which she replied, only if you want to, but I will double check everything with you during labour. I said nah...it's pretty simple. Hospital, vit k, managed 3rd stage.
We didn't have to refresh as I went into labour that day!

MW's have to ask cause the government REQUIRES them to.
My MW always laughs and says "don't get your hopes up. Nobody faxes your birth plan to baby before they come so chances are they'll just do what they want"
And they do tend to ask you what you want to do and check with you during the process. It's easy to write one thing out but at the time I might throw all that out the window. It's imperative (oh, big word!) that you have faith in your MW and that they will communicate with you.
I actually think I'll end up yelling at DP to turn off the music that I have requested. LOL.

One thing about giving birth at 30 weeks is that all of that goes out the window.
It is good to think about what are your essentials and ideals, but don't forget that there are two of you in the birthing process and sometimes bubs has a very big say in what is going to happen.

My birth plan with DS was to get the baby out! For me I just went into it with a completely open mind, which meant I couldn't be disappointed when things didn't go according to plan. I don't think many births actually end up going according to the birth plan, so yeah I think it's important to keep an open mind.
In fact the only thing I was sure I wanted was the drugs! I am a big wuss...

I put a lot of time into my birth plan as well, cos although I know/knew that it probably wouldnt actually go to "plan" I still wanted all the medical team to know exactly what I wanted (no LMC here unless you go privately with an Obs/MW).
I was open to other options and to be flexible as well as long as it was in our best interests. I even printed it on A3 to hang on the birth suite wall. Which didnt happen cos it all happened so fast, but the MW got a normal printed copy almost at the end of my labour anyways
