I have heard quite a bit lately that babies start waking more frequently at night around 4 months old- its certainly happened to a lot of the Jan 2010 babies.

Can anyone tell me why, and when/if it gets better again?

I was supposed to go start back at work today, but I got a total of 4 1/2 hrs sleep last night so am not going as I cant function or do my job properly or safely this tired- hoping my boss will let me extend my maternity leave that ran out today.

At about 5 months babies begin to wake up fully between their sleep cycles, rather than just drifiting in and out of light and deep sleep. Here's a link to a Sleep Store article on this:

Good luck with your boss today!

Oh no, I dont want to hear that tobysmum!!!

We had a problem around 12 - 14 weeks with lots of waking in the night. We are finding it more difficult to settle DS for his night sleep, but once hes down he sleeps well.

Hope things get better for you kellz

4 months was rather hideous with both of my babies (first bubba day sleeps went to poo, second bubba it was the nights), things got better after 5 months.
Two little girls under 2!

I read something in a book once that talked about increased brain activity around the 4-5 month old age.
It's when they begin to see in full colour like adults, their eyes begin to work together, they see in 3D and lots of other complex developments like that.
They have to re-learn to settle themselves to sleep cause they have to learn to switch off and control the new amount of brain activity.

Each baby will differ in when this starts and stops though.

Edited for bad typing.

Thanks heaps for that. We have definatly noticed a big difference in how he plays with things, notices things etc in the last few weeks, so that all makes a lot of sense!

Kellz - Have you joined up with Parents as First Teachers/
If not, try find one in your area. They are great for working through your babies development with you and teaching you about things you can do to help their development. I also love that they give you information so you can SEE the development. There is so much we miss and we don't even realise it until someone points it out

Could this explain grumpiness too? My four month old has been SOooooo grumpy the last few days. I am not sure whether it is lack of bowel motions (hasn't gone properly for days!) or teething? Or neither? :-)

Every baby is different but I would say teething. I think (not 100% though) that teething can affect bowel motions (or changes in bowel motions can be an indicator of teething).

Try some Bonjela on your bubbas gums and see if you notice a change in attitude.
