    Posted: 29 September 2009 at 6:01pm
Since about 10 weeks ago I've been getting some serious pain just behind my nipples, usually on one side at a time and usually a few times a week. It sort of builds up to the point where I have to either run around frantically getting a wheat bag ready, or cry like a little girl :P

I did think it might have been the cold, but it happens whether or not I keep them warm. There are also matching lumps on both sides, but I'm pretty sure the pain isn't coming from those.

I know they're supposed to be tender, but am I right in thinking this isn't normal?

I'm getting the same thing! It's horrible horrible intense pain and I don't like it at all.

I am pretty sure mine is from the cold though even if it's not that cold and I'm wearing layers, it's just a sudden change in temperature.

Sorry TMI question, but when they hurt and you look at them are they kinda swollenish right in the middle and have changed colour? Cause mine do that too.

Yes, they used to go really dark purple but lately they just swell up and go purple or white in the middle... I never knew they could be so colourful!

I got this when I was pg....and again last week, really must buy a test a check lol. but anyway I think it was called blanching, there was a more technical term that my mw used but can't remember. I used to use a wheat sack or wrap a blanket around me. I found using cloth breast pads from early on really helped.

I had this too during pregnancy and it was sooooo painful sometimes it made me cry. I had the purple colouring thing to, sometimes black almost.

The cold definitely made them worse, I would get worried when I got out of the shower as this is when it would normally start.

Can't say I found a miracle cure but wheat bags and trying to keep them warm all the time seemed to help. I did find it got better near the end of my pregnancy and when the weather warmed up.

Yep, mine go white and purple in the centre and it's SO painful, I have to heat myself up really quickly to get the pain to go away.    I guess it's just one of those pregnancy things!

Aw, no miracle cure?

Is it really called blanching? Isn't that a cooking term?

Oh well. I'll just have to put up with it, thank goodness the weather is warming up!

Have you tried gently massaging them with your finger tips?

I got it, I assumed it was from the cold. Just made sure I either had a padded bra or breastpads, and wore enough layers when it was cold.

Oh wow... I googled blanching nipples (that sounds so wrong) and kellymom had an answer that sounds right - linky

The Raynauds bit sounded more likely than the first bit, since I'm not breastfeeding yet lol.

I have also had sore bbs. It is the strangest feeling, in the beginning I felt bruised and I was over the moon when that feeling went away...now I get these needle pains...It feelis like someone is sticking needles into my bbs and concentrating on my nipples, it sharp pains...I haven't noticed if it had something to do with cold but I definately will pay it more attention.

Mine start feeling like I've put ice on them for long periods of time when I get out of the shower. Usually I just ignore them and they feel more normal once they warm up again, maybe half an hour or so.
