We're booking flights to take our newborn son back to the UK to meet his grandparents (he'll be born in Feb, travelling June).

We want to fly from Rotorua but that means stopping in Auckland for at least 9 hours before we get on the long haul trip.

I don't like the sound of this but we don't really have any other options - driving for 3 hours wouldn't be much fun and I don't want DH to have to drive home when we could all be jet-lagged.

Has anyone else had this kind of space between flights and what can you do to keep bubs occupied and us sane. I know he won't be crawling but he will need some kind of stimulation I'm guessing (just from being around a friend's baby at that age).

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Alison

Do you have friends you could visit in Auckland? he'll still need plenty of day sleep at that age..so that should pass some time - if bubs will sleep in a pram or carrier...

could you get a motel near the airport for a few hours to have a quiet base? would be a lot easier to get naps and quiet off time with not much stimulation between two stimulating flights.

Urgh, I have spent some long hours in airports coz of flight not joining up, def easier when they are little compared to crawling and walking. Can you fit a blanket into your bag so he can have a kick on the ground? And some small toys. Plus sleep time and food time takes up a chunk of the day. If a baby is tired they will sleep, DS has slept at airports and on planes. If you have a carrier it is a really handy thing because then you can walk about cuddling baby without your arms almost dying haha!

Whatever entertainment you are planning for yourself on the plane you can do at the airport..hmm that sounds dodgy...but since there are two of you at least you can get up and go for a walk to stretch your legs!

It is quite surprising how fast time goes tho Auckland airport isn't the most interesting.

Can you hire a car to drive to Auckland (a one way drive to the airport) and then fly back to rotorua on the return?

That's a great idea! Will have to see about the car coming with a capsule if we decide not to take ours over.

Other ideas are also great, DH loves watching planes take off and land so entertaining him would be okay!

We don't know anyone in Auckland either!
