My wee man is five and a half months, and I plan to start solids just before he turns six months.

I am thinking of doing a combination of pureed food and baby-led weaning (so giving him whole stuff too) - has anyone else done this? Advice?

I am also not sure what sort of food to start on him as I have read SO much conflicting advice. Some of the advice says baby rice as it is a familiar taste (which does make sense) but it can block them up, then I read maybe pear but apparently sometimes giving sweet puts them off savoury, or do I try sweet ish vegetables like pumpkin?

What worked for you?

I've been doing a similar thing as DS is a little bit fussy and sometimes I find the finger food seems to go down better than the pureed food. I started with baby rice, then I tried the veges like kumara, pumpkin and potato and then pear, banana, apple. He wasn't keen on much till he had banana and then was a bit interested in pear and apple so even though I started with the veges he still liked the fruit best. So often what I'll do is try a pureed version and if he's not interested I give it to him to try himself. First off I used one of those feeders for pear and apple and they were a hit that way. For the types of foods, I still followed the watties chart and have been introducing those foods, at the specified times so those doing BLW probably wouldn't count what I'm doing as BLW at all

Yep we're doing/done a combo of BLW and it's great.....we started Clodagh at about 5.5 months on baby rice and moved on from there feeding her ourselves...then I just started giving her finger food when I found out about BLW from a lady at my coffee group. So these days I feed the messy stuff like yoghurt, porridge or pureed/mashed vege to her on a spoon (and sometiems let her hold it) and give her lots of sandwiches, bits of fruit, handless cup etc so yeah its a real combo method.

Seems to work well for us

purees - pumpkin, carrot, pear, apple, broccoli are all god for this. Frozen peas/corn/carrots are really easy to steam up and puree if you're short on time.

Finger food - steamed veges are good but some are a bit slippery to pick up. ds started having toast with marmite from about 6 1/2 months, he loves it! Pretty much anything steamed/softened and cut into easy-to-grasp pieces is pretty good - there are some websites/forums on BLW if you do a search, which have some advice on what to start with.

ds got quite constipated when he started solids at 4 1/2 months and he still is, be aware that banana can be very binding, which is a shame because it's so easy to prepare!

I wanted to do BLW but ds was so ready for solids at 4 1/2 months and it was a bit too soon for finger food, I found that I then got into the habit of purees so it took me a while to break out of it - now he loves his finger food much more than being spoon fed and has a great pincer grasp with things like peas etc. (getting it into his mouth is the main challenge!). He tried boiled egg for the first time today which is also a great finger food, but Plunket says not to give in until after 7 months.

re: purees - if you go to the supermarket and check out the baby food it can give you soem good ideas of what foods/combinations you can make

Hi 1st Time Preggies,
I can highly recommend the book we have for sale called "What do I feed my baby?" - It's written by our Nutrition Expert Leanne Cooper. I found it extremely helpful with my daughter.
You can buy it here What do I feed my baby?

Also you can go to our experts section and ask Leanne a question - she has a wealth of knowledge!

You can start on plain farex and it does make them have more solid poos but no big deal. Most of the time though (mine included), babies don't like plain baby rice cereal until you can mix it with fruit.

So I started with that and after 2 days of not really into it, tried pureed potato coz it's fairly bland (and not fruit) and then went on to pumpkin and then kumara etc. and did a number of vegetables before starting with fruit. He still is a sweet tooth and not into his veges though.

The conflicting advice is just that everyone does it different. The above is the official advice I've received... but usually people change things to suit their own style or baby's likes etc.
