I've always used Polar fleece on my kids beds, even now at an older age they have fleece blankets... I have the mattress protector/fitted sheet/flat sheet/fleece blanket and duvet and if it's really cold I have another fleece on top of the duvet.

Is your house prone to condensation and mould? Maybe it's that, that is sitting on top of the blankets. I do know that our house is really cold and when I get up in the morning our blankets are damp.

Just as an aside we have polar fleece sheets too.
