How early do kids show a tendancy towards being right or left handed?
My DD is very very right handed at the moment, she only uses that one to pick up stuff and explore while her left is still in the NB random wiggle stage. There is a marked difference between the two sides. I have tried putting her toys on her left, placing a toy in her hand, but she just drops it, where as the right hand she will look at it and move it around. Should I go see my plunket nurse/doctor? Thanks

my daughter was like yours and then all of a sudden she started using her left as a preference!

I think you should definately see dr but it'd probably be nothing. It is just one of those things that are best checked.

I would get it checked if it were me to be honest... as for dominate hand, while some children will shows signs early on its not until about 2 + that you can be sure thats their dominate one...

I asked and was told it's completely normal. Lily loves her left hand and her left side but was told that's just the way some kids are and is nothing to worry about. As long as she does do stuff with the other side, I wouldn't worry if she favours one side more! Hth, but of course if you are concerned - then get it checked!

DS has a definate preference for his left side, but still uses his right for things too. Its just quite clear that his left side is stronger.
I would possibly get it checked out just for peace of mind perhaps because you've said she avoids the left side where possible.

I agree with all the above, K also loves doing things more with her left hand. The right hand does catch up in what it can do but its almost a week lag and she still prefers left.

Kiara is 3 and Teagan is 2, now we're expecting our long awaited 3rd!

Cooper was the same, right from when he started batting at the playgym it was always with the left hand (DH and I are both lefties) even if I moved him closer to the right he'd reach over with the left. Same with rolling, I'd put a toy on his right and he'd reach over with the left and roll but put one on the left and he'd just pick it up with his left hand! He was like that for ages and it was just on the weekend DH and I were saying he doesn't favour one over the other anymore.

i hear it isnt till theyre 5 years old that you can tell if they are left handed/right handed or ambidextrous. I know with our son (just turned 3) we thought for ages he was going to be a lefty, but now he uses his right side for everything so who knwos.
DD uses her right arm/hand for everything at the moment, and her left just isnt as skilled lol. I'm not stressed in the slightest at this age

Active Movement say around 3yrs. Mention it to your plunket nurse as she may have some tips but I'm sure its nothing too much to worry about.
Keep helping her use that left hand too
