Was just wondering if anyone knows round about how much it costs to connect to phone and power when moving to a new place? And I guess water as well?

Shouldnt cost anything, you should be able to just call the power company and they will take your details, and the phone is pretty much the same. We have moved a few times now, never cost a cent.

Water will stay in the landlords name and they will give you the bill every 3 months to pay.

I didn't pay for the power to be connected. With the phone you usually have to pay a new connection fee. i think mine with vodafone was $50

If you stay with the same provider they may not charge you. Some do though.

Depends on the house - if the power has been totally disconnected by the previous tennents you will have to pay to be 'put back on the grid' but they only do this if the house is new or empty for some time. Other then that they should only charge a bond, and might not even do that if you have a good record.

Definitely shop around, when we bought this house we completely re-wired it & one company was going to charge a connection fee, the other wasn't.

Thanks ladies. I am living at mums at the moment so don't have phone or power under my name yet. Will just ring around when the time comes. Which will hopefully be sooner rather then later.

We are with vodafone for phone didnt cost to set up and because its a wireless job you can unplug it and take to next house when you move with no charges or need to change #. Fantastic idea when renting.

Power wise, we just stayed with the company that already had the house conneceted although dhs family have all just moved to powershop.co.nz and it seems like a good deal, i still have to look into it but we will change if all good.

Water - im not sure sorry we dont pay for water in dunedin - probably wont be far off though the council needs money for the bloody stadium grrr
