My MW is stumped so thought I'd ask you girls -

Its the same issue at both breasts. I have a let down which sprays milk so good supply but then it dies down completely to no supply within 10-20secs. Then there's a break of 3-5mins with no milk at all until I have another letdown which sprays for the same length of time again before dying out. This continues the entire feed It is frustrating for me and bub as its taking ages to feed and its hard to work out exactly what he's getting.

My nips are fine, no trauma - just a bit overworked but not terribly sore. My left boob is tender in the flesh and under the pit but I know I have adenoids in that side so we think its from that. My right boob is only tender under the pit when held/touched/bumped - the same discomfort as in the left side pit except its not constant.

With my previous child I had a massive supply and would squirt milk constantly - feeding or not!

Anyone know what could be up?

ETA - my letdowns are painfully sharp BTW, not sure if that is relevant to the issue or not.

I dont have any ideas really... maybe PM fattartsrock?

Just an fyi that spraying with let down doesnt actually indicate you have a good supply, just that you have a good let down... you can have an active let down and still have low supply iygwim (likewise you can have a slow let down and still have a very good supply).

It does seem strange, have you tried massaging the milk down while he sucks? Perhaps he isnt getting it down himself very well? Might be a silly question but how do you know there is no supply between let downs? Is he sucking but no milk in his mouth or is because your not spraying?

Must be a very frustrating time for you hun!

When I express (I nearly lost my supply so have been expressing some entire feeds out at varying times of day and then bottle feeding him EBM) I can see exactly what is happening.

When I am BFing him, it confirms the same thing is happening cos he gulps like mad for 10 or so secs then just sucks with no swallows for some time until the next letdown when it begins again.

He usually gets about 3 letdowns per side and I let him have 3 sides if he wants it.

Yes, I always massage down particularly from my pits as I feed and express as it is so sore there. I have never had any infection either time I've BF and I can't explain why necessarily but I don't feel like it is blocked ducts.

I'm not sure on the other bit, but really painful letdowns are usual second time around. Mine hurt like a MF but after a few months they settled down

I have experienced multiple let downs in 1 feed, I've always found it was when she started to slow down or if I am looking at her sometimes I can feel my milk flowing faster.

I have painful let down on my left side, but the kind of pain I experience is because it is Very forceful! I can spray over 1/2 a meter lol

Hope you find a solution or an answer.

I too would Pm Fattartsrock.

Blow me down!

I've had this issue for 10 days since my supply fell away and now that i've asked for help I think its coming better - isn't it just the way .. makes you feel like a hypochondriac dork!

I thought our 4am feed went well cos he slept his first 6hr stretch so expected to have more there than typical but this mornings feeds have been alright too. I guess all the complan and spirulina tabs are starting to have an impact! He's consistently swallowing every few sucks on the right boob, still slow on the left but I figure if I keep up my supplements and feed from the left breast first so that it gets extra stimulation if he goes back for a 3rd side then we should get there.

I wonder if when my supply dropped away, it only took my hind milk? Man this BFing thing can be such a bl**dy mystery at times

Thanks for the support girls, hopefully I wont need to be back asking questions

Glad to see things seem to be improving for you.

I get painful let downs too, I wonder why some people do and some don't even feel a let down. Just a random sidenote.

Yeah it is interesting Tara, then again I usually feel it more in my left and sometimes don't feel it on my right side but I know she is getting the let down because she's swallowing fast.

My right side lets the team down lol.

Thats the only thing I can think melnel. I was wondering if my body was holding back the fat as I am very little

When I was at the health shop the other day the lady told me off for being too skinny while trying to BF She told me that I should stop worrying about getting back to pre-preg weight and focus on making lots of fatty milk for my baby. Funny given I have no intention of getting back to pre-preg weight as it was an unhealthy weight for my height!

Made me cos I have no reason to try to drop weight - and I know that I am skinny ... I ALWAYS HAVE BEEN!! I thought it was very assumptive of her to suggest that I might be desperate to lose weight when i didn't give her any reason to believe I would be, except that I am not a big girl and haven't held any pregnancy weight. Her attitude didn't help my state of mind!

I'm not sure that things are all better with the supply, but will persevere and wait to see what he has gained next week.

My PN said the exact same thing to me as I was back to pre preg by 4 weeks post. IMO people should get their facts straight before having a go about our weight!
I was in no way dieting, I gained 15 kg while preg and it all just fell off so to speak. I was doing nothing to make it come off.

In saying that I was told I need to eat more food than my partner, he is 6'3 and 140kg...

Make sure you are resting and having plenty of water to drink as well. Have things like rolled oats/porridge for breakfast you can even add yoghurt and fruit to it.

Thanks lilnic, I'm glad I'm not the only one getting a rap about weight loss for no good reason. I gained 21kgs and lost 15kg by week 2 I haven't lost anymore since (and don't need to, I'm a nice size now), seriously not dieting (believe me, I'm a HUGE fan of chocolate and BF is my excuse to eat whatever I want to!) Its just that I don't retain fluid during pregnancy and once baby is out everything falls straight off me - was the same with DD, was back at pre-preg weight by 3wks but had an oversupply of milk with her so its definitely nothing to do with my weight or size.

Haha, resting is a joke when you also have a nearly 3yr old - housebound and losing the plot! I've been drinking like a fish since having him, just going to keep the complan and spirulina going and try to eat more protein.

And I can officially say that I am back on track! Just expressed and got 80ml - thats twice what I got first thing yesterday morning! And my right side didn't stop and start like it was. My left side (my side that lets the team down as you'd say Nic) did stop and start but I got heaps more milk from that side than I have been so something is definitely working! YAY, YAY, YAY I did it! So I guess it was all relative to the supply issue which is now working itself right

Thanks girls, ya lots!

Well done babyg, sounds like you're doing everything right.

Why is it that pregnancy (and after) means that everyone thinks they can comment on your size. They sure as h*ll wouldn't if you weren't pregnant or just had a baby so what gives them that right now?! It really frustrates me. I too get comments all the time, and believe me, I haven't done anything to try to lose any weight. So frustrating.

Are you eating all those "good" foods to help?

When jake went on his booby strike and my supply dropped heaps I was having porridge and toast for brekkie, almonds and a couple of lactation cookies for morning tea, high carb/protein lunch, complan and a couple of lactation cookies for afternoon tea, high carb/protein dinner and some more lactation cookies for dessert! Was also taking fenugreek and blessed thistle tablets....

My supply came back very quickly, but I think those lactation cookies have been stored in my hips every since LOL

I didn't diet, just changed my diet, I am young and I guess I am lucky that my baby has nothing wrong with her and so at birth I made a decision to eat better meat, veges, more fruit, drink water (never drank it before because hated the taste!) and I barely have junk food now, maybe once a fortnight. I snack a lot but try make it healthy lol.

You sound similar to me, I retained no fluid either. Had an over supply until about 9 weeks and then I thought I lost my supply because suddenly wasn't engorged anymore and then 12 weeks was back to being engorged and now it's settled again.

Tara I agree! I carried her 'well' according to my mw and barely looked pregnant until 30 weeks and still everyone was saying how small I was for xx weeks. Then she's born and people are going "Oh you shouldn't diet, you just had a baby!" - please people learn your facts first!!

Anyway, rant over hope things continue on this track, seems like something is working for you atm?

I am the opposite lil Nic - I carry my babies all out front and look BIG during pregnancy but its all baby and straight after birth its all gone I think thats why people think I've starved myself after labour but its just that I, myself don't really grow at all during pregnancy - its all baby and boobs

Haha - yes, I am eating plenty of other foods barr chocolate I'm eating very balanced, just not getting enough KJs as I need. So am working on eating more protein (I eat plenty of carbs, fruit and veg as it is), have also been having complan and spirulina tabs. My supply came back within 48hrs of adding the supplements to my diet
