Can I take my boy to the swimming pool? He's probably a bit small at the moment, but he loves being in the water, so I can't wait till he's big enough for me to take him swimming!
So when is it ok/allowed for babies to be in a public pool?

Technically yes, only law is that under 8 you must be in with them, but different council's will have different rules and bylaws. My friend who teaches babies swimming says that 6 months is best as clhorine isn't great for young one's lungs.

What about little tidal pools at the beach, nice and warm? Once he can sit up he'll love it.

I wouldn't and didn't take DS to any swimming pool until after 6 months. being a May baby meant we could use the grandparents swimming pool over summer and I was happy with that.
My next issue is, when should he go in the spa?! I'm leaning towards 2yrs old, but only if he's in for 10mins, and he doesnt EVER put his head under.

public pools and chlorine is what i would be concerned about but that's just me!
Lots of people take their babies swimming i suppose it's personal choice.
Ds1 went swimming at about 18 months in a public pool, but family poo;ls much younger.

The advice I've always had is 6 months - they're better able to regulate their body temp or something and I guess the chlorine isn't so good when they're tiny.

Stefany my friend has taken her baby in her spa at home since he was quite little - why is it more of an issue than a swimming pool? I would've thought it would be better because it's nice and warm just like a bath but with chlorine in it?

I was going to do swimming lessons with my DD but our local pool advises 9-10 months although most recommend 6 months.

I was told it was to do with them being able to regulate their body temp better.

I have done the spa at 16 months, but am weary of going under. Its not that they don't put their head under, its just that she can (and has thanks to her bad mother), slipped and gone under and the warm water is great for bugs!

I'm only gonna start taking Clodagh to the public pools this summer. DF can take her from now if he wants though lol. I waited cos the pools are germy as heck and I wasn't gonna risk it. But yep we've popped her in the sea once when we were swimming, other than that just the bath at this stage.

Actually Lily has been in a spa, was only for 5 mins when she was 7 months old down in Chch. She also went to the hot pools too but again that was only 5 mins or less because we didn't want her getting sick
(worst weather ever to go!) she ended up with croup.

Jayden has been since about 4 mths on and off. He loves it but for swimming lessons a friend of mine said it is not worth taking them to lessons until after 1. I haven't taken Jayden to lessons and probably won't until next year sometime

Yeah, I was most worried about the chlorine, so I'm thinking we will wait till 6 months and he's had those jabs. He has been in a spa, at my MIL's, but his head was well above the water, it was a really warm day and he was straight into a towel afterwards. They don't use chlorine but some kind of extreme filtration system which is cleaned every few days, and it's the same temp as his bath usually is, so I figured it would be fine!
MIL also has a wee paddling pool with a shade on it which will be great when we're up there at Xmas... so he can be a water baby in that until he's old enough for the pool!
I definitely won't be bothering with lessons or anything till he's a wee bit older though.

Oh yeah, DS has been in the spa. Last weekend even. In the nuddy lol. He looooved it. The reason I haven't taken him much is it's been too cold but now that summers on it's way we'll hit the out door pools yahoo.

If you take babies swimming the water should be above 30 degrees because babies and young toddlers cant regulate their own body temperature. They can go in cooler water but you just have to monitor and watch for them being cold. If they start to shiver, they should be taken from the water immediately.

We took Jackson swimming from 13 weeks old in both salt and chlorine pools

we started going to the pool from 5 n half months just for 15min so as not to get too cold.

We started swim lessons at 6 months. They were half hour and in the warmer therapy pool.

He loves the water and has so much confidence now.

You could use a small blow up type pool at hm over summer, just add some warm water in first.

Have Fun !!
