What essential oils are ok during pregnancy? I'm wanting to make a massage oil and was thinking of lavender and rose. Are these ok? What other yummy combos are there?

I have a really good book called "like chocolate for woman" which is an aromatherapy book. It says to avoid the following oils topically (ie via massage, bathing and compress) during pregnancy : It is okay however to use them in an oil burner.

Basil, Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Cypress, Fennel, Jasmine, Juniper, Lemongrass, Marjoram, Myrrh, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme.

You should avoid rose during pregnancy. It's a uterine stimulant, so meant to be good in the delivery room. You're absolutely fine with lavender.

Does anyone know why peppermint is bad? My acupuncturist knows I am pregnant but uses peppermint massage oil on my shoulders. I'll have to tell him next week to stop!

I don't know much about Peppermint. I studied aromatherapy as part of a therapeutic massage diploma but I don't actually use that diploma (much to DP's disappointment!!). I just checked a couple of reference books I have though and it might be because it has properties used to "promote and stimulate mentsruation" but probably only in high doses. I'm not entirely sure though. See what your accupuncturist says next time you see him.
