I think canned food is heat treated to make it keep for longer. This probally kills a few nutrients...I'm not sure.

I think that homemade is better, in general for most foods and the budget but its not going to hurt if they have them every so often. They are convenient if you know you have a busy time ahead and don't have time to make some food. I wouldn't think the canned things have as much nutrients as homemade items but there could be alot worse things that you could feed your baby.

I used to use them a lot more when we first started solids but I only buy the custard or dessert things as DS pretty much has what we have.

I dunno about this but for people that make home made preserves, there is no additives to make them last longer but they last for quite a while I thought....so is it nessecarily true that the baby food would need preservetives???

PS.sorry about the bad spelling can't be bothered to correct as in a sulk. hehe.

I have given Jackson the odd fruit squishy bag thingy, but I personally prefer to give him homemade (he refuses to eat the meal style ones anyways). Mainly because I know whats going into his food and 2. because I can control/monitor the additives and preservatives (within reason of course), particularly the colours and sugar that can make kids go hyper and crazy.

Also, we did BLW so eating from a jar or can didnt really cut the mustard.

I say do what floats your boat, your baby your choices. I do however find it sad when I see babies/toddlers only fed from cans and packeted food

Agree, especially when it's not hard to mash or puree up what you are eating and give to baby (slightly alter it if need be)...

DS has pretty much all home cooked food because of his allergies. If I cook the food at home I know exactly what is in it and how it is prepared. I wouldnt want to eat all my meals from a can, so I wouldnt do that to my son either.

Unless you wait for the specials? They just had 10 cans for $10/$11 at woolies earlier and 4 for $6 too last week! But they're still pretty pricey and get more expensive each stage if you hadn't noticed!

Like anything- for adults or babies- pre packaged stuff is *usually* probably not as good as fresh home made...BUT you have to weigh in convienience etc as well! We BLW most of the time but also use puree and we use canned dessert (custard/fruit) a couple of times a week. I do try to make my own most of the time.

It won't be damaging to their health IMO but would be to your wallet if you ONLY used jarred food and also you might end up in a situation where bubs gets used to the puree feel/taste of even the 'older' babies canned stuff... and then you might strike difficulties getting bubs to eat finger food etc later on (which Plunket reccomends they ought to be doing by 9 months anyway). But no it won't kill them lol.

But, I guess Plunket has to endorse watties as that is one of their major sponsors...

But they wouldnt have a sponsor that they didnt agree with. Otherwise some tobacco firm could sponsor them and get free publicity.

Tobacco companies can no longer sponsor anything. Do you remember Benson & Hedges Fashion design awards, Rothmans Rally of NZ etc etc

Canned/bottled baby food is convience, the human race is very time poor these days with the huge costs of things (catch 22) so therefore they are a sanity saver for parents on the run, plus for parents who can't cook to save themselves or the like.

I think with the huge regulations now days that baby food is pretty good. Gross tasting yes, but would be an adequate diet for a normal child.

I am pretty sure that legally in NZ you have to state all ingredients in something?

The canning process is what makes it last so long. It is the same as if you canned tomotoes or peaches at home - you put them in the jar and heat them to seal it

We so far have been making all our own except for desserts as I am not making individual custards. I am happy to have the odd pouch or can for emergencies or for DD to try a different flavour I might not have at home, eg guava. But I don't like the idea of canned meat (I don't know why, it just freaks me out) so she won't be having any like that.

I thought that too but I know some things are left off, a friends dad does packaging and mentioned it once when she had an allergic reaction

Also canned meat - you can get canned chicken now! The idea totally grosses me out!
