Topic: Chicken Pox?? Posted: 06 December 2010 at 10:47am |
So Jae started coming up in what looked like normal itchy bites last week, but each day new ones appear... the ones she hasnt or cant scratch have developed s small clear blister in the center of each spot (doesnt take up the whole spot) and so far, none of them have burst, or gone yellow, or crusted over etc... the ones she has scratched are still just red spots but with scratch marks all over.
Is that CP, or would hives or attack of zombie fleas be more likely (we JUST had the house fleabombed a week before spots showed up!)
Help?! All the pictures I can find via google or the worst case scenario pics of kids covered in huge yellow pusy looking lumps, which is nothing like what she has!
Also... is it possible for someone immune to pass the virus on? The only person I know of who has had CP in the last few weeks has had no contact with Jae directly for a few months, but I was around them a couple of weeks before they were diagnosed... Could I have brought the virus home?

i dont know sorry . but wanted to say that i remember taking one of the kids to the docs cause i wasnt sure if it was pox or not and it turned out to be bites! eek and then when they did finally get chicken pox i was like "oh of course thats the pox!" there was just no mistaking them. (and yet when my friends told me i would recognise them i thought they were silly).

Interestingly enough my daughter has come out in a strange rash - which also looks similar to what you describe. Kind of looks like early stages chickenpox - but by now (day 2) i would have expected the first spots to have changed, but they havent there is just lots more of them. Also look similar to flea bites with the little blister - but also not really.
Ive just been googling (dont laugh too hard) all kinds of rashes to see if i can work out what it is, but no luck... so maybe if its still there or worse tomorrow - ill do the doc check.
Maybe we need a 'rash' photo zone of our kids lol

Im pretty sure chicken pox some up quite quickly and will *usually* start to scab over in a few days to a week, so I would say they arnt chickent pox, but may pay to take her to the dr to confirm?

Oh dear... was hoping it wasnt cos we were at someones house last week with someone in early pregnancy... eep!
If it is CP, I dont understand where she could have gotten them from, trying to think who we have hung out with in the last few weeks (since the spots appeared at least a week ago, plus apparently up to 24 day incubation period...) but the only one I know of who HAS had them recently, hasnt been anywhere near Jae... odd!

DD had a strange rash a month or so ago, I thought they were flea bites at first, then she got more raised spots and we thought chicken pox but none of them changed, blistered or crusted over just kind of looked like they "might" develop fluid but no. After 3-4 days I took DD to the docs and they said it was just some sort of weird viral rash.... Took about 3 weeks for the spots to go away properly.
Edited to add that the spots started on her thighs, then to her legs and round her neck, shoulders and arms. She never got them on her trunk or face like CP would.

People that have had the chicken pox vaccine can pass it on, it's called viral shedding, that's why they recommend that children don't get it if their mum is pregnant, so she might have caught it off someone who has no symptoms at all but has had the vax.
Hope she feels better soon.

When Jackson had the pox he had them for about 4 days before the first blister burst and started to scab over.
When Jackson caught them, we also didnt know where he got them from as we hadnt been around anyone that had them.
This is a pic of them before, during and after bursting:

Generally, CP is passed by a person with CP coughing or sneezing near you, or with direct contact with lesions, but as two_boys mentioned, you can also get asympotmatic viral shedding (both from vaccine and from an infected person - they may have CP without clinical symptoms) - although the last option woud be very rare, as you would have to have pretty close contact to pass it along (as they generally wouldn't be coughing/sneezing).
It could have been some random person out in public pre-CP spots showing sneezing/coughing over Jaelyn? Don't stress that you've bought it home with you! If you have had CP before, it is very unlikely (unless it was a very mutated CP strain) that you wouldn't be immune and hence you wouldn't have been able to re-catch it and pass it along (Once you have CP, the virus *lives* in your spine for the rest of your life - hence shingles - and so the chances of catching it again are very low).
Hope she's doing better soon

babykatz: oh noes! But you're right, better now than christmas day!
We returned to the doc today, as the spots werent changing or evolving which i thought was strange. Anyways for us - it turns out not CP after all, but they think an allergic reaction.
Rashes are a pain huhh?

It took at least a week for the spots to take on that blistered look... and whats wierder is that they never popped and went weepy... they've just gone straight to the yellow crusty look... trust my kids to do things outside of the norm :/
I'm just hoping that big brother doesnt catch them as he only had a mild dose a few years ago and nothing since if HE gets them, then that will time in just perfectly with xmas day
I just wish I knew where she could have got them from... all I can think of is random mall or supermarket exposure?! Means I've had to do the rounds and warn everyone shes seen in the last month since apparently incubation period is up to 24 days

i would take her to the docs and get something for those in case they get infected. Baking soda in the bath will help soothe the spots too.

Yeah Id take her the Dr's as well Lisa.
And my mum always used pinotarsel(sp?) when we had CP or itchiness, it STINKS but works well.
