Topic: Mastitis?? Posted: 24 November 2010 at 5:16pm |
I woke up this morning and was slightly engorged...not sure why, guess DS must've ordered some extra milk yesterday...
Anyway, I have been feeding frequently and expressed a little this morning to make myself more comfortable and both breasts are soft. I have tender areas in both breasts, no lumps or hardening, but I do have a headache. Don't think I have a temperature.
Just wondered if this sounds like mastitis or whether my breasts are just tender from being slightly engorged this morning and it'll just pass??
Any input would be very appreciated!

Hey, having had mastitis when dd was about 4 1/2 months - I can't remember any tender breasts to the lead up. We had just flown to the USA - so was feeding a bit more than usual because of on the plane and am sure I got it because of that. Anyway. I had a heck of a temperature, shakes etc, ended up at the emergency dept. I do remember a tender breast during the shakes, nausea etc.
Anyway not sure how much help I have been!!
Take care and try to keep feeding to keep the breasts clear, just in case it is.

I think it just sounds like pain from being engorged. I've had mastitis a few times and there's always been a lump or hard patch and redness on the skin just before the headache, temp etc.
Just in case though make sure you fully empty out and if you do get a temp or any other symptom get yourself along to the doc to double check, mastitis hits really quick and is very unpleasant.

I think its just tender from being engorged...I had mastitis and was freezing cold and literally could not get out of bed well before I noticed a lump on my boob...keep an eye on it though as it does happen rather quickly!

Thanks for your replies.
I'm feeling much better today...still a little tender (but was full again this morning) but not as bad as yesterday.
I get a bit paranoid and panicked as I had so many issues when I first started BF, including recurrent blocked ducts and ended up on antibiotics...
Thanks again!

I had lumps and went to a Breast Physician. She basically said that if there is no fever then it isn't mastitis. So as the others have said it is likely to be engorement or 'leftover' pain. Try cabbage leaves in your bra, they are supposed to help, apparently you need to break the spin of the leaf

Yeah I think you're ok, I have had mastitis this week and it started off with a mad fever, bright red boobs, screaming pain to feed etc and lumps in the breast so I think you're probably just engorged
